The transition from high school to college hasn’t been any more of an obstacle than a pebble on the road for Glastonbury’s Brooke Strauss.
The former Gatorade Player of the Year in both girls’ cross country and track and field has picked right up where she left off in high school in her first event as a collegian.
Strauss, a freshman at UConn, helped lead the Huskies to a team victory in the Ted Owen Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State, on Saturday at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain. She finished second in the 5K race, crossing the finish line at 17:12.40. The Huskies dominated, with other runners finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the event.
Strauss won the Connecticut State Open meet last fall and broke the state 1500m record in the spring as a senior at Glastonbury High School.
“We had a great showing today. Our women pulled out a great win. They followed the race plan, packing up early and getting out early. Nine of our athletes went under the 18 minute mark, which is fantastic. Shout out to our freshmen runners, Brooke Strauss, Sascha Letica, and Teanne Ewings for finishing in the top five for us,” UConn head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said.
Strauss and the Huskies will return to action on Oct. 5th at the Paul Short Run.
