Freshman Tijuan Pair returned two interceptions for first-half touchdowns Friday night as top-ranked Maury posted its latest Eastern District rout, defeating Manor 57-8 at Powhatan Field.
The Mustangs (3-6) can take solace in knowing they outscored the Commodores in the second half, all of which was played with a running clock and with many Maury reserves, but it was 57-0 at the intermission. The Commodores have won 35 straight district games and are on the way to their seventh district title in a row, and they’ve outscored their district foes 391-28 this year.
It only took Maury (8-1) 12 seconds to score as Eli Moss returned the opening kickoff 84 yards. The Commodores then went ahead 8-0 on a trick two-point conversion as Moss completed a pass to kicker Charlie McCoy at the back of the end zone.
McCoy went 8 for 8 on PAT kicks, though he missed a 41-yard field-goal try.
Tayshawn Branche, who had eight carries for 57 yards, ran for touchdowns of 24, 9 and 7 yards. Quarterback Dominick Everette ran for a 5-yard score and completed 14 of 22 for 170 yards, including a 38-yard TD to Moss.
Pair’s pickoffs went for 65 and 41 yards.
Manor broke the shutout in the third quarter. After Maury made a goal-line stand, a tipped pass was grabbed by Mustangs linebacker Josiah Bailey in the end zone.
