Quick slant: The Hurricanes, ranked 18th in the first College Football Playoff rankings, are looking to bounce back after a disappointing road loss to SMU. The Orange have lost five straight games.

About No. 18 Miami (6-2, 2-2 ACC): 

About Syracuse (3-6, 1-5 ACC): The Orange are in search of a quarterback. After starter Steve Angeli suffered a season-ending injury against Clemson, Syracuse has turned to Rickie Collins and walk-on Joseph Filardi. Filardi started against North Carolina and completed just four of 18 passes in a loss to North Carolina.

Three things to watch

1. Miami has been lacking explosive plays. The Hurricanes’ 113 plays that went 10 or more yards are tied for 71st nationally. They’ve had 31 plays go 20 or more yards, which ranks 101st in the nation. Syracuse’s defense has allowed 148 plays of 10 or more yards, which is second-to-last in the nation. The Orange has given up 46 plays of 20 or more yards, which is 123rd nationally. This should be a chance for UM to move the ball in chunks.

2. The Hurricanes need to reduce the number of penalties they are committing. UM ranks 129th in penalties per game, averaging eight a game. One particular issue has been pre-snap penalties like false starts and offsides. Last week, nearly every Miami offensive lineman committed a pre-snap penalty. It is something the Hurricanes need to correct quickly.

3. Syracuse was the team that knocked Miami out of the playoffs last year. UM took a 21-point lead against the Orange on the road, but Syracuse came back for the improbable win. The Hurricanes are once again fighting to secure a playoff berth — though their chances are slim — and the Orange are in the way. With UM needing some style points in addition to a win, the Hurricanes may try to run up the score as much as possible on the scuffling Orange.
