Quick slant: The Hurricanes and Gators enter this game heading in opposite directions. Miami is coming off a rout against then-No. 18 USF. The Bulls achieved that ranking, in part, by beating Florida in Gainesville. After losing to the Bulls, UF responded with a second straight loss against No. 3 LSU. Saturday’s game has the national spotlight, as ESPN’s “College GameDay” is coming to UM for the first time since 2020.
About No. 4 Miami (3-0): The Hurricanes have rolled through three games, taking down ranked opponents Notre Dame and USF. The offense has been clicking, and the defense has made only a few mistakes so far.
About Florida (1-2): UF has been struggling, particularly on offense. Quarterback DJ Lagway threw five interceptions in last week’s 10-point loss on the road against LSU.
Three things to watch
1. The Gators’ biggest offensive issue has been Lagway’s struggles. The UF quarterback dealt with injuries all offseason, and he took a step backward from his solid performance from the end of last year. Lagway, a former five-star prospect, has 629 passing yards and five touchdowns with six interceptions. He did that while the Florida offensive line did a good job protecting him. If the Hurricanes get more pressure on him on Saturday, Lagway could have another rough game.
2. Miami’s offensive line has also done a good job protecting its quarterback, Carson Beck. When Beck has had time to throw, he has dissected opposing defenses. Beck threw his first two interceptions of the season last week, but one of those was on a tipped pass. Unlike UM, UF’s defense has struggled to get pressure on quarterbacks, meaning Beck will likely have plenty of time again this week.
3. Miami has been missing two potential playmakers the last two weeks: running back Jordan Lyle and wide receiver Jojo Trader. Cristobal said the pair has been dealing with some nagging injuries; he said Lyle could have played last week, while Trader “barely missed the cut” to play. Both players, if healthy, can create explosive plays for Miami’s offense.
