Gators bounced from AP Top 25 following USF debacle

GAINESVILLE — Florida’s stunning loss to USF dropped the Gators out of the Associated Press Top 25 after they’d risen to No. 13 before stumbling at home against the unranked Bulls.

UF’s 18-16 defeat Saturday night in the Swamp might have been the most stunningly inexplicable loss during Billy Napier’s four seasons. The Gators (1-1) were 17.5-point favorites against the unranked Bulls.

But Florida scored just one touchdown and committed 11 penalties for 103 yards, including back-to-back defensive penalties on USF’s game-winning drive — one when defensive tackle Brendan Bett spit on Bulls offensive lineman Cole Skinner

A 20-yard field goal by Martin Gramatica as time expired completed the upset, which moved USF to No. 18 and into the Top 25 for the first time in seven years. UF received 70 votes to sit 29th.

Meanwhile, Florida State (2-0) climbed four spots to No. 10 following a 77-3 win against East Texas A&M. Miami stayed at No. 5 after a 45-3 win against Bethune-Cookman.

Florida’s loss left Napier 20-20 with the Gators. Four of those wins against FCS competition, including a 55-0 season-opening win against Long Island University. UF also defeated four Group of Five teams — USF in 2022, Charlotte in 2023, UCF and Tulane in 2024.

The Gators open SEC play Saturday night at No. 3 LSU trying to prevent their second straight 1-2 start.
