Glenview man charged with fatally shooting his friend, Niles police say

A Glenview man is charged in connection with the shooting death of another man Niles police say was a friend.

Markus Horenberger, 52, of the 500 block of Cherry Lane in Glenview, is charged with felony involuntary manslaughter. Authorities allege he fatally shot Robert Reiling, 60, of the 8400 block of North Greenwood, in Niles, in the head.

Horenberger was scheduled to appear in court Saturday morning.

According to a Niles Police Department news release, police were called around 5:40 p.m. to a home in the 8400 block of North Greenwood in the north suburb on a call of a man with a gun and shots fired.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a man, now identified as Reiling, had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner’s office indicates Reiling was shot in the head, and his death is ruled a homicide.

Niles deputy police chief Thomas Fragassi told Pioneer Press the two men were friends.

Police called the incident an isolated one with no threat to the public.

The investigation is being handled by the Niles Police Department with assistance from the
North Regional Major Crimes Task Force.
