Jonathan Ornelas hit a two-run home run and Gwinnett scored at least one run in each of the first four innings en route to an 8-4 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday night at Coolray Field.
Ornelas’ home run helped chase Norfolk starter Trey Gibson — a former star at Lafayette High in Williamsburg — after three-plus innings. Gibson fell to 1-2 and has a 7.71 ERA since joining the Tides two weeks ago.
On Tuesday, the Stripers battered Gibson for 10 hits and seven earned runs. He struck out three and walked three.
Gwinnett scored single runs in the first two innings before Ornelas homered with two outs in the third. Carlos Rodriguez and Jim Jarvis had doubles in the fourth, and David McGabe added a two-run single to chase Gibson in the fourth inning.
Norfolk’s TT Bowens had a first-inning two-run home run and finished with two hits.
The teams continue their series in Gwinnett with a 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. Norfolk’s Tyler Wells (1-1, 2.65) and Gwinnetts JR Ritchie (2-1, 4.31) are the scheduled starters.
