Hampton University fires football coach Trent Boykin after 2-10 season

HAMPTON — Hampton University fired head football coach Trent Boykin on Sunday, less than 24 hours after the Pirates closed a difficult 2-10 season with a 38-10 loss at Rhode Island.

The university announced the decision in a release, with athletic director Anthony D. Henderson Sr. stating the program would begin pursuing new leadership immediately.

“It is always difficult to make changes, particularly when it involves dedicated professionals and student-athletes,” Henderson said in the statement. “Our commitment remains unwavering to ensuring Hampton football achieves the highest standards of excellence on and off the field. We want to thank Coach Boykin for his dedication and leadership and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Boykin, a longtime running backs and special teams coach with nearly 30 years of collegiate experience, was elevated to interim head coach for the 2024 season. Hampton removed the interim tag in October of 2024, and this season was his first full year as the permanent head coach.

The Pirates have lost 14 of their last 16 games dating back to last season. They closed the 2025 season on a six-game slide — their longest losing streak in at least 30 years — and posted the program’s worst record in the modern era, despite a 2-4 start.

The university said a national search will begin immediately to identify the program’s next head coach.

“Hampton Athletics expresses its gratitude for Coach Boykin’s service and contributions to Hampton University,” the release said.
