Hampton University men cruise past Loyola Maryland

Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt’s 23 points helped Hampton University defeat Loyola Maryland 93-71 Wednesday at the HU Convocation Center.

Gaines-Wyatt shot 5 of 8 from the field and 11 for 15 from the line for the Pirates (5-5), who led 46-27 after a first half in which Michael Eley scored 12 of his 19 points. Xzavier Long and Kody Williams had nine points apiece.

Jordan Stiemke led the Greyhounds (4-6) with 16 points.

Virginia Wesleyan 70, Eastern Mennonite 65: Omari DeVeaux and Demeir Pollard scored 15 points each to lead the Marlins (5-1, 1-0), who are ranked 15th nationally by d3hoops.com, to a home victory in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener against the Royals from Harrisonburg.

Amari Moorer contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

EMU (2-5, 0-1) went on a 12-0 run to pull even at 59 with 2:20 remaining, but Moorer followed a teammate’s miss with a three-point play for a 64-61 lead with 49 seconds on the clock.

North Carolina Wesleyan 100, Regent 66: The host Bishops (4-2) cruised past the Royals (2-6) in Rocky Mount behind five double-digit scorers, led by Rashod Smith with 20 points.

For Regent, Darrin Clark scored 15 points and Antoine Brown 10. The Royals were outrebounded 38-26 and committed 25 turnovers.

Christopher Newport 82, Marymount 70: Isaiah Dozier scored 17 of his game-high 19 points after halftime and had eight rebounds and four assists in Arlington for the Captains (6-2) as they beat the Saints (1-7).

Tyson Henderson had 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for CNU, while Toa Hollenbeck had 14 points and Ethan Ward 11. The Captains led 36-34 at the half and never trailed in the second.

Anthoney McClary scored 13 for Marymount.

Richmond 84, Belmont 76: Will Johnston scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as the Spiders (7-1) took down the Bruins (8-1) in Nashville, Tennessee. UR’s Mike Walz closed the first half by banking in a 3-pointer from three-quarter court, a shot that made the “Top Plays” on ESPN “SportsCenter,” to reduce Belmont’s halftime lead to 43-41.

Johnston shot 7 for 10, including 3 for 5 from beyond the arc. David Thomas scored 18 and AJ Lopez 15.

The Bruins were led by Nic McClain, who posted 19 points, five assists and two steals.

James Madison 67, NC Central 62: On the verge of their first home loss of the season in Harrisonburg, the Dukes (6-4) responded with a 12-0 run that turned a 59-54 deficit against the Eagles (3-7) to a 66-59 lead in the final 10 seconds.

Cliff Davis, who had two 3-pointers in the key surge, scored 18 points, and Justin McBride had 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Gage Lattimore scored 29 for NCCU, which remains in search of its first victory over a Division I opponent.

Longwood 101, Pfeiffer 55: Elijah Tucker had 24 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Lancers (5-5) against a Division III foe in Farmville. Emanuel Richards scored 17 points and added six rebounds. Jacoi Hutchinson had 15 points and went 7 of 9 from the field against the Falcons, who were coming off weekend losses to Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan.

Southern Mississippi 82, Radford 75: Isaac Tavares and Tylik Weeks both scored 18 points for the visiting Golden Eagles (5-3), while Djahi Binet shot 7 of 8 from the free-throw line on the way to 17 points.

The Highlanders (3-7) were led by Tyson Brown’s 19 points.

No. 9 Brigham Young 91, California Baptist 60: AJ Dybantsa and Keba Keita each scored 22 points as the Cougars (7-1) won their fourth straight neutral-site game — though this was in Salt Lake City, about 45 miles from campus. Keita added 14 rebounds, and Robert Wright III had 15 points and 11 assists. Martel Williams led the Lancers (7-2) with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

No. 10 Iowa State 132, Alcorn State 68: Milan Momcilovic made his first eight 3-point shots while scoring 27 points as the host Cyclones (8-0) prepped for their weekend visit to top-ranked Purdue by setting a program scoring record. Iowa State shot 70.8% from the field and 73.3% on 3s, the best marks in coach T.J. Otzelberger’s five seasons, and set a school record with 22 3-pointers.

Minnesota 73, No. 22 Indiana 64: Cade Tyson had 17 points and eight rebounds to help Minnesota win in Minneapolis in the Big Ten debut for both head coaches, the Gophers’ Niko Medved and the Hoosiers’ Darian DeVries.

Langston Reynolds scored 17 points and Isaac Asuma added 15 for the Gophers (5-4, 1-0), who used a 40-25 rebounding advantage to hand the Hoosiers (7-1, 0-1) their first loss under DeVries and hold them to a season-low score after they were averaging nearly 90 points entering the game. The Gophers ended a nine-game losing streak to Indiana.

Pacific 80, Air Force 65: Elias Ralph’s 31 points and five rebounds led the Tigers (7-2) past the Falcons (3-7) in Colorado. Kajus Kublickas scored 13 points and added six rebounds and seven assists.

Lucas Hobin finished with 19 points for the Falcons. Air Force also got 15 points from Caleb Walker.

Navy 66, Delaware State 59: Aidan Kehoe had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Midshipmen (5-5) in their victory in Dover, Delaware. Mike Woods scored 16 points, going 5 of 8 and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line, and Austin Benigni had 12 points.

The Hornets (2-8) were led by the triple-double of Corey Perkins, who had 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. He also had four steals.
