Hampton University women halt skid at 3 with win at UNC Wilmington

Hampton University’s women ended a three-game slide Friday night with a 60-48 victory over UNC Wilmington at Trask Coliseum.

Aisha Dabo scored 16 points and Kayla Lezama had 14 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Pirates (9-11, 3-5 Coastal Athletic Association). Kiki McElrath added 11 points, and Akilah Shelton had six points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

UNCW’s Rori Cox had 13 points, 13 rebounds and two steals, but the Seahawks (5-15, 1-8) shot just 34% (18 of 53).

HU finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run for a 21-13 lead and was comfortably ahead thereafter.

Campbell 63, William & Mary 54: In a fourth quarter of wild fluctuation, the Camels (14-8, 7-2 CAA) rallied past the Tribe (10-9, 3-5) at Kaplan Arena, getting a small measure of revenge for last year’s tournament title game.

Down 51-40 early in the fourth quarter, W&M reeled off 14 consecutive points for a 54-51 lead as Monet Dance sank a 3-pointer with 3:53 remaining. But the Tribe never scored again as Campbell finished on a 12-0 run, taking the lead for good at 56-54 on Jasmine Felton’s layup at the 2:53 mark.

Cassidy Geddes had 15 points and three steals for W&M, while Natalie Fox had 14 points. Alexa Mikeska had 11 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

Olivia Tucker scored 16 points for the Camels, while Felton and Gianni Boone added 12 apiece.

Johnson & Wales-Charlotte 66, Apprentice 60: The Builders (9-7) saw their losing streak reach three with a nonconference loss to the Wildcats (13-5) in Newport News.

Ronnice Berry had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Apprentice, while Dajanelle Linton-Robinson had 12 points and 10 rebounds and NeOndra Kelly had 11 points.

Korletta Daniels and Laylah Toscano led JWU, a new addition to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, with 17 points apiece. Trailing 59-58 with 4:30 to go, the Wildcats outscored the Builders 8-1 thereafter.

Florida International 74, Liberty 61: Rhema Collins’ 19 points, 11 rebounds and four steals led the Panthers (12-7, 5-3 Conference USA) in Lynchburg. JaKayla Thompson had 13 points and six rebounds for the Flames (9-10, 3-5).

No. 17 Mississippi 83, No. 5 Vanderbilt 75: Cotie McMahon scored 27 points, Christeen Iwuala had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Ole Miss (18-4, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) won at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday night on the Ole Miss campus before moving due to icy conditions.

Ole Miss built a 44-25 lead at halftime behind 25 combined points from McMahon and Iwuala. Mikayla Blakes led the Commodores (20-2, 6-2) with 29 points.

Men

UC Santa Cruz 78, Regent 67: Playing in Christopher Newport’s Freeman Center, the Royals (3-16) fell to their Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference rival Banana Slugs (13-8), who were playing their second of three games after a cross-country trek to Virginia.

Grant Worley scored 17 points, Chauncey Gilliam 12 and Darrin Clark 11 for Regent, which yielded a 5-0 run for a 37-29 halftime deficit and couldn’t catch up. For Santa Cruz, Joe Espy had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Ben Lim had 17 points and six rebounds.

Apprentice 74, Southeast Christian 42: The Builders (11-7, 3-2) earned a victory in the New South Athletic Conference Concord Classic on Barber-Scotia’s campus, near Charlotte in North Carolina.

Sandhills Community College 116, Tidewater Community College 91: The first-year Storm dropped to 1-17 with a loss in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

VCU 89, Loyola Chicago 75: Terrence Hill Jr. came off the bench to provide 24 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Rams (16-6, 7-2 Atlantic 10), who erased a 24-9 deficit against the last-place Ramblers (5-18, 1-9) at Siegel Center. Tyrell Ward scored 15 points and Jadrian Tracey 14 for VCU.

Miles Rubin finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Ramblers, while Xavier Amos added 18 points and eight rebounds. Loyola Chicago, which led for almost the entire first half, has lost nine in a row.

Tracey’s layup with 19:50 left gave VCU the lead for the first time, and the Rams never gave it up.

No. 3 Michigan 83, No. 7 Michigan State 71: Yaxel Lendeborg had 26 points and 12 rebounds, Elliot Cadeau scored 17 and Morez Johnson added 12 points for the Wolverines (20-1, 10-1 Big Ten) in East Lansing. They moved into sole possession of first place in the conference, coming off a win over previously unbeaten and fifth-ranked Nebraska.

The Spartans (19-3, 9-2), once down by 18, went on a 13-2 run early in the second half to pull within three, and Jaxon Kohler made a tying 3-pointer with 7:57 left.

Jeremy Fears, who scored a career-high 31 points, had a steal and layup that put the Spartans ahead 57-55 with 7:27 to go. Michigan responded by making 5 of 6 shots while holding Michigan State scoreless for more than three minutes to seal its sixth straight victory.

No. 21 Saint Louis 102, Dayton 71: Trey Green made a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Ishan Sharma added 18 on six more 3s and the host Billikens romped.

Quentin Jones also had 18 points for the Billikens (21-1, 9-0 Atlantic 10), who made 15 of their first 22 attempts from 3-point range and never trailed. It was SLU’s 15th straight win overall and its 18th in a row at Chaifetz Arena.

De’Shayne Montgomery had 23 points and Amael L’Etang 12 to lead Dayton (14-8, 5-4), which has lost four consecutive games for the first time since January 2014.
