Kayla Lezama scored 23 points and Kiki McElrath had 21 Friday night as the Hampton University women climbed to .500 with a 59-49 triumph over William & Mary before 1,032 at Kaplan Arena.
The Pirates (8-8, 2-2 Coastal Athletic Association) accomplished a stifling defensive effort in the middle of the game, outscoring the Tribe 42-14 over about 19 1/2 minutes to move ahead 44-26 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. W&M never got the margin to single digits after that.
Natalie Fox had 20 points and 11 rebounds for W&M (8-8, 1-4), but her teammates didn’t give her much support.
The Tribe went ahead 12-2 in the first six minutes but went exceedingly cold. It shot just 34% (20 of 58) overall, sinking just 2 of 18 from 3-point range, and equaled the Pirates by committing 17 turnovers.
Lezama and McElrath combined for seven of Hampton’s nine 3-point baskets. Le’Asia Foreman had four steals and 11 rebounds and Olivia Smith had eight points, three rebounds and four assists for HU.
Hampton will play at North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m. Sunday. W&M won’t play until next Friday, a 7 p.m. clash in Boston against Northeastern.
Denmark Technical College 72, Apprentice 68: The Builders (8-4) lost in Newport News to the Panthers (7-6) of South Carolina despite Ronnice Berry’s 26 points and 12 rebounds and Joy Wright’s 19 points and 15 rebounds.
