Hampton University won the HBCU Invitational at Disney’s Wide World of Sports with a finishing flourish, defeating Edward Waters of Florida 65-47 Saturday to emerge atop the four-team bracket near Orlando, Florida.
HU (6-3) trailed 29-20 at halftime but outscored the Division II Tigers from Jacksonville, Florida, 17-11 in the third quarter to get back in the game and 28-7 in the fourth to run away.
Kiki McElrath scored 17 points, Aaryn Battle 12 and reserve Kayla Lezama 11 for HU. Le’Asia Foreman had nine rebounds and four assists.
Norfolk State 63, North Carolina A&T 50: NSU earned its first Division I victory of Jermaine Woods’ coaching era, winning in Greensboro.
Da’Brya Clark provided huge all-around contributions for the Spartans (4-6) with 21 points, eight rebounds, five steals and five assists. Jasha Clinton added 17 points and four steals, and Anjanae Richardson had 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
The Aggies fell to 3-6.
Virginia Wesleyan 67, Randolph 48: The host Marlins (5-2, 1-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) overcame the WildCats (3-4, 0-2) behind Bre Robinson’s 21 points and Brianna Long’s 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jaiden Hunter had 12 points and six rebounds.
Apprentice 78, Christendom 54: Ronnice Berry had 34 points and nine rebounds as the Builders (4-2) beat the Crusaders (1-2) in Newport News. She was 12 of 24 from the field, including 4 of 10 from 3-point range, and 6 of 6 on free throws.
Dajanelle Linton-Robinson added 12 points and nine rebounds for Apprentice, and Joy Wright had 10 points. The Builders outscored Christendom 26-11 in the third quarter to move ahead 66-37.
Sisters Lucy and Mary Pennefather scored 22 and 19, respectively, for Christendom, located in Front Royal.
Toccoa Falls 67, Regent 52: The Screaming Eagles, from Georgia, outscored the Royals 20-9 in the fourth quarter to punctuate a victory at Gateway Christian as Regent fell to 1-7.
Jada Wood had 23 points, seven rebounds and four of Toccoa Falls’ 23 steals. Valmary Nunez added 15 points.
Shardae Williams and Amara Groth scored 10 points each for balanced Regent offense. Groth had six rebounds, three assists and two steals. My’Angel Carter had eight points and 14 rebounds, and Mikaylah Telfer grabbed 11 rebounds.
Bryant & Stratton 65, Southwest Virginia Community College 48: The Bobcats, ranked 17th in National Junior College Athletic Association Division II, improved to 10-0, 6-0 in the conference, with a victory in Tazewell County.
Sian Lewin had 28 points, six rebounds and five assists, Janiyaha Pickett had 12 points and eight assists, and Carissa Frederick added 12 points.
