Heat pick up rookie-scale options on Jaquez, Ware

The Miami Heat have picked up the rookie scale contract options on forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. and center Kel’el Ware for the 2026-27 season, the South Florida Sun Sentinel has confirmed.

The moves, seen as a formality, had a deadline of Oct. 31. By moving ahead of next Tuesday’s start of training camp at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, the Heat became the first NBA team to address such current rookie-scale decisions.

Jaquez, the No. 18 pick out of UCLA in the 2023 NBA draft, is coming off an uneven sophomore season, but could immediately find the opportunity to regain his footing in the wake of the ankle surgery expected to sideline guard Tyler Herro for at least the first month of the regular season.

Ware is coming off a solid rookie season that earned second-team NBA All-Rookie honors, after being selected No. 15 out of Indiana in the 2024 NBA draft.

The rookie-scale team option guarantee with Jaquez is for $5.9 million for 2026-27. He then would become a restricted free agent in the 2027 offseason unless extended prior.

The rookie-scale team option guarantee with Ware is for $4.7 million for 2026-27. The Heat will then also have a team-option decision with Ware next October, for a $7.1 million salary in 2027-28.

The lone remaining decision on the NBA rookie scale for the Heat now stands as one with 2022 first-round pick Nikola Jovic, with that deadline at the end of October. Jovic otherwise would stand as a restricted free agent next summer.

The Heat will hold their annual media day on Monday at Kaseya Center, followed by a four-day training, camp at FAU that is closed to the public.

The two rookie-scale options picked up by the Heat do not impact the team’s position against the 2025-26 NBA luxury tax, with the Heat still lacking space below the tax to sign an additional player for their 15th and final standard roster spot.
