Swimming and diving
Class 5 Region A
First Colonial’s girls and boys swimming teams continued to reign in Class 5 Region A, winning both divisions of its championship meet Saturday at Princess Anne Rec Center in Virginia Beach.
The Patriots’ girls had 486 points, followed by Kellam (397) and Ocean Lakes (204). The FC boys had 424.5, followed by Great Bridge (310) and Kellam (241).
First Colonial girls teammates Dara Duffy, Maris Marchione and Norah Everhart all swam in four races, including relays, and went undefeated in them.
Individually, Duffy won the 200- and 100-meter freestyles in 2:04.02 and 58.27, Marchione won the 50 free in 26.89 and Everhart took the 200 individual medley in 2:22.54.
First Colonial won every girls swimming race except the 400 free, which Kellam’s Avery Brecke led in 4:29.07. Deep Creek’s Sydney Holback won the diving competition.
On the boys’ side, FC’s Chase Wilkerson won all four of his races. He was on all three of the Patriots’ victorious relays, as well as winning the 100 backstroke in 57.04.
Kempsville’s Coyle Moore and Great Bridge’s Karter Wachs earned two individual golds apiece. First Colonial’s Parker Knapp (100 butterfly) and Austin Temple (50 free) each won an individual event and were on two first-place relays.
Ocean Lakes’ Patrick Kinser took the diving championship.
Top swimmers will go on to compete Feb. 21 in the state Class 5 meet at SwimRVA in Richmond. The Class 5 diving will be held Feb. 19 at Brittingham-Midtown Community Center in Newport News.

Wrestling

Class 6 Region A
Grassfield, with 351.5 points, easily repeated as the Class 6 Region A team champion with a historically dominant showing in Chesapeake. Landstown (240.5) was second, and tournament host Oscar Smith (154) was third.
The Grizzlies put a wrestler in the final of all 14 weight classes and won 11 of them. Both of those totals are the most in Class 6 Region A history.
Nolan Mather (106 pounds), Leland Mendez (120), Luca Schinelli (132), Nicholas Barrett (138), Simeon Barrett (144), Hunter Johnson (150), Nick Moore (165), Nate Moore (175), Colton Jones (190), Chase Burns (215) and Christian Funches (285) earned titles for the Grizzlies, who are ranked 28th nationally by Sports Illustrated.
Higen Castillo, Dennis Bruin and Brady Greene were the runners-up for Grassfield, which is looking for its second consecutive state Class 6 title.
Landstown’s Lucas Bundy (113), Western Branch’s Brandon Cynar (126) and Oscar Smith’s Eugene Miller (165) took first at their weights.
The top four finishers in each class qualified for the state Class 4, 5 and 6 tourney Feb. 20-21 at Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Class 5 Region B
Nansemond River won the Class 5 Region B championship in Norfolk, qualifying 12 wrestlers for state. The Warriors had 310 points, while homestanding Granby had 255 and third-place Maury 170.5.
Of Nansemond River’s 11 finalists, Trystin Boggs (120), Terryl Wright (126), Brayden Galicia (132), Matthew Shodunke (138), Wyatt Ellenor (150) and Charles Falkenstein (175) took titles.

Cape Henry Collegiate placed fourth and Peninsula Catholic took fifth in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championships at Benedictine’s gym in Richmond. The host Cadets won the title with 321 points, while St. Christopher’s placed second with 307.5.
Cape Henry’s Townsend Winans took first place at 190 pounds, beating Drew Pendlebury of St. Christopher’s 10-3 in the final. Also among the Dolphins, Malik Peralta was the runner-up at 144, Conner Walck took second at 132, and Jack Grew (113) and Luke Feldman (150) placed fourth. Cape Henry had 163.5 points.
Peninsula Catholic’s Ryder Allen earned the championship at 157 in a 16-15 thriller against Benedictine’s Manny Evans. Also among the Knights, who totaled 156 points, Jacob Stewart (132) was third, while Kenton Wesby (120), Alexander Wiatt (190) and Dominik Richard (285) were fourth.
Norfolk Academy’s Matteo DeFilippo won the 138 bracket, helping the Bulldogs take eighth in team points. He beat Noah Rankin of St. Christopher’s 8-5 for the title.
