High school scoreboard: Kempsville boys knock off Indian River with buzzer-beating basket

Class 5 Region A quarterfinals

#6 Kempsville 70, #3 Indian River 68

Christian Lynch’s putback at the buzzer lifted the Chiefs to an upset victory Monday night at Indian River. Lynch finished with a game-high 22 points, and Jaquees Mitchell added 16 points and Isaiah Johnson 11.

#1 Green Run 74, #8 Deep Creek 33

Malik Gooden’s 17 points led four double-figure scorers as the Stallions rolled into the semifinals. Zaevion Cleveland added 16 points, Elijah Ellison 14 and Julius Hymons 11 for Green Run. The Stallions raced to a 30-6 lead after the first quarter.

#4 Salem 62, #5 Kellam 60

Joziah Mincey (19 points), Terrell Lewis (17) and Jason Patrick (13) scored in double figures as the SunDevils held off the Knights and earned a semifinal matchup against top-seeded Green Run.

#2 Princess Anne 74, #7 Cox 61

Eziah Goodson led the Cavaliers with 25 points and added six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. NaMarqus Byrd added 20 points, five rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots, and Nico McIntyre finished with 19 points and five assists.

The Cavaliers play Kempsville at 7 p.m. Wednesday at PA.

Girls basketball

Class 5 Region A quarterfinals

#1 Princess Anne 88, #8 Cox 13

Amaya Olds paced the unbeaten Cavaliers in a quarterfinal romp, collecting 19 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Micah Ojo also contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards and also had five assists and four steals. Jizelle James added 11 points and Alauna Olds scored 10 points.

#4 Kellam 67, #5 Great Bridge 61

Mia Spain scored 22 points as the Knights rallied from a five-point deficit after the opening quarter to earn a spot in the semifinals against Princess Anne.

Kellam’s Kate Spain finished with 18 points and Lizzie Clark added nine. Kelsey King led the Wildcats with 21 points.

#2 Salem 86, #7 Indian River 37

The SunDevils’ Briseis Estrada poured in 24 points and Valeria Medina (17 points) and Alaya Monroe-Sutton (12 points, six rebounds, five assists) also scored in double figures.

Indian River’s Cierra Selby scored a game-high 26 points.

#3 Deep Creek 63, #6 Green Run 41

The Hornets cruised to a win and will in a semifinal against Salem.
