High school scoreboard: No. 11 Princess Anne boys, No. 12 Grafton girls open season with victories

#11 Princess Anne 60, Indian River 56

Many VHSL teams begin their basketball seasons Tuesday, but a few started Monday. Nico Mclntyre led the Cavaliers to a victory in the Lakeland Cavalier Classic with 22 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Eziah Goodson added 12 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Aidan McKeating scored five points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Private schools

Summit Christian 54, Hampton Christian 53

Courtland Reiter scored eight of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for the Eagles. For the Warriors, Justice Powell and Brenton McCoy had 15 points apiece and Marcus Ruff added 14.

Girls basketball

Bishop Ireton 78, #4 Norfolk Christian 33

The Cardinals from Alexandria, who are the VISAA’s reigning Division I champs and one of the D.C. area’s best teams, won easily despite Keira Kilkenny’s 10 points for the Ambassadors. Norfolk Christian was last season’s D-II runner-up.

#12 Grafton 60, Warhill 27

Hope Barnard (17 points), Mya Napoleoni (14) and Taylor Ragland (13) led the Clippers, while Katherine Wenger had eight, Joy Mims four and Emerson Sweeney and Izzy Scimeca had two apiece. Ragland had 12 rebounds and Wenger 10. D’Shela Walker scored 17 points for the Lions, followed by Alane Sewer with four and Taleah James, Ellie Jacobs and Bria McAdoo with two each.

Bay Rivers District

Lafayette 40, Smithfield 34

The Rams won despite top Smithfield scorers Jada Collins and Destini Boone.

Tabb 37, Jamestown 35

Haley Atkins’ 10 points were part of her double-double for the Tigers. Allie Dallas led the Eagles with 15 points. Tabb’s scorers included Gabby Eaton (eight), Addie Burhite (one), Lakelyn Bagheri and Ella Rivera (five each) and Baya Miller (three). For Jamestown, Kate Vannoy scored six points, Josie Hughes four, Sylvia Razec three, and Bailey Hollenbeck and Grace Hughes had two each.
