High school scoreboard: StoneBridge girls complete 38-0 volleyball season with state title

CLASS 6 SEMIFINALS

James Madison 3, Stafford 1

The Warhawks from Vienna, coming off a 2-0 quarterfinal shutout of Cosby, won again.

Langley 2, Independence 0

Having ousted Western Branch 6-0, the Saxons posted their second straight shutout. They’ll play at 4 p.m. next Saturday against James Madison, which they defeated for the Region D title.

CLASS 5 SEMIFINALS

Cox 3, Riverbend 0: Bella Glenn, Mikaela Quinn and Atalee Booth scored for the Falcons as they beat the host Bears in Fredericksburg. Rose Holland had two assists and Ava Amuial one. Sammi Terry earned a shutout with six saves, and Bella Terry made a goal-line save.

First Colonial 1, Prince George 0: The host Patriots made it an all-Beach District championship game against Cox by shutting out the Royals. Lucy Domozick scored, and Addie Savoie made six saves.

Region A champ First Colonial and Region A runner-up Cox will play each other at Independence High in Ashburn at noon next Saturday for the title.

CLASS 4 SEMIFINALS

Gloucester 3, Chancellor 1: The Dukes beat the visiting Chargers from Fredericksburg to gain a spot in the championship game. Gloucester will take on Loudoun Valley at 10 a.m. next Saturday at Independence.

Loudoun Valley 5, Grafton 1: The Clippers’ season ended with a road defeat. Loudoun Valley outscored Grafton 2-0 in the first half and kept up its momentum.

CLASS 3 SEMIFINALS

Poquoson 3, Western Albemarle 0: Lucy Carpenter scored twice, Elizabeth Trant had a goal and an assist, and Alana Robinson added an assist for the Islanders. Goalie Sam Titko posted a shutout.

The Islanders advanced to face Tabb, the area’s top team, in an all-Bay Rivers District state final at Independence High at 2 p.m. next Saturday.

Tabb 8, York 0: The Tigers won their VHSL-record 112th straight game moved to the cusp of their fifth consecutive state title, beating their county rivals at Bailey Field. They will face Poquoson at Independence High in Ashburn at 2 p.m. next Saturday.

VISAA DIVISION I FINAL

No. 1 Trinity Episcopal 5, No. 2 Collegiate 2: In a matchup of two of the nation’s better teams, the Titans beat their Richmond-area counterpart Cougars at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond.

VISAA DIVISION II FINAL

No. 1 Fredericksburg Academy 2, No. 2 St. Anne’s-Belfield 0: Also at St. Catherine’s, the Falcons took the trophy by blanking the Saints.

Boys volleyball

CLASS 5 REGION A FINAL

#1 Kempsville d. #3 Indian River, 3-0

(25-17, 25-22, 25-22)

Wyatt Strawbridge led the Chiefs with six kills, three blocks and 47 assists. Trent Beeson had 15 kills, Rylan Patterson added 12 kills, Trevor Strawbridge had eight kills and two blocks, and Hunter Pugh had four kills and five blocks. Both teams will head to state.

CLASS 5 REGION D FINAL

#1 Kellam d. #2 First Colonial, 3-0

(25-19, 25-23, 25-18)

Nathan Pyka had 14 kills and Dylan Calkins had 12 kills, and Bennett Pyka had 32 assists. Both teams will head to state.

Girls volleyball

CLASS 5 REGION A FINAL

#1 Kellam d. #3 Ocean Lakes, 3-2

(22-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23, 17-15)

The Knights won a thriller in Deep Creek’s gym for a region championship. Both teams will advance to the state tournament, with Kellam at home against the Region B runner-up and the Dolphins on the road against the Region B champ.

Riley Erwin had a triple-double (14 kills, 12 digs, 22 assists). Sophie Barnes posted a double-double (21 kills, 22 digs).

Also for the Knights, Mia Lynch had six kills, Mia Schmidt had five kills, and middles Skylar Witte and Vanessa Jarvis had four kills each. Giulia Allison had 26 digs, and Emmie Irving had 26 assists.

VISAA DIVISION I FINAL

#6 Flint Hill d. #1 Paul VI, 3-2

(25-22, 15-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-8)

In a clash of Northern Virginia teams at Steward’s gym in Richmond, the Huskies upended the Panthers in their third meeting of the season. Flint Hill won two of those.

VISAA DIVISION II FINAL

#1 StoneBridge d. #2 Fredericksburg Christian, 3-2

(25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-13)

The Cavaliers capped a perfect season, finishing 38-0 with 36 shutouts and a 101-3 set record. Saturday in Steward’s gym, Maddy Wartick finished with 23 kills; Libbie Plumlee had 13 kills and 18 digs; Hayden Marchigiani had 20 digs; Selah Telfer had 52 assists and 20 digs; and Zara Ofole had 10 kills and five blocks.

VISAA DIVISION III FINAL

#2 New Covenant d. #1 Chelsea Academy, 3-0

(26-24, 25-22, 25-19)

The Gryphons can take a trophy back to Lynchburg after knocking off the Knights from Front Royal.

VISAA DIVISION IV FINAL

#1 Brunswick Academy d. #2 Gateway Christian, 3-2

(16-25, 25-8, 15-25, 25-17, 15-8)

The Vikings, from Lawrenceville, outlasted the Crusaders of Virginia Beach for the title in Steward’s gym in Richmond.

Girls tennis

VISAA DIVISION I FINAL

No. 1 Collegiate 5, No. 2 Potomac School 1: The host Cougars finished a three-match tournament stretch in Richmond in which they won 15 completed matches to their opponents’ two.

VISAA DIVISION II FINAL

No. 1 Cape Henry Collegiate 5, No. 2 St. Anne’s-Belfield 3: Trailing 3-2, the host Dolphins won three matches in about a five-minute span to take their third state championship in four years.

After the tandems of Cora Timms/Liza Pridgen and Avery Jane Demuth/Sydney Murphy won 8-4 and 8-2, respectively, to give Cape Henry a 2-1 edge, the Saints from Charlottesville prevailed on singles lines 1 and 5 for a brief 3-2 lead. But in short order, No. 4 Demuth, No. 2 Pridgen and No. 6 Mary Burke completed 8-0, 8-3 and 8-3 victories to earn the senior-laden Dolphins a celebration.
