Report: Hokies DL Burgos to enter portal

Virginia Tech defensive lineman Keyshawn Burgos plans to enter the transfer portal, sources told 247 Sports.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive lineman has totaled 57 career tackles, including four in four games this season, and 2.5 sacks in three-plus years with Tech. He plans to redshirt and have one year of eligibility remaining.

Snipes hosting block party at noon Friday

Snipes USA is partnering with Nike’s Yardrunners program for a block party at Norfolk State at noon Friday. Exclusive early access to the limited-edition NSU Air Max 95 sneakers will be provided.

A “Spartan Speaks” fireside chat is planned, and local personalities DJ Rayvon, Izzy the DJ and Alana Mercedes are scheduled to appear.

No. 20 Va. Wesleyan deals No. 5 CNU first defeat

Virginia Wesleyan (7-1-1), new to the Division III national rankings at No. 20, won 2-0 Wednesday night at home to hand No. 5 Christopher Newport (7-1-2) its first defeat. Both teams began the season out of the top 25.

JaMarhe Wills scored his third goal of the year in the 16th minute, and Giovanni Zizza doubled the lead in the 37th minute. Ben Haynes made four saves for a shutout.

No. 16 UVA boosts unbeaten streak to six

No. 16 Virginia (6-1-2) extended its unbeaten streak to six games by rallying past Milwaukee 3-2 in Charlottesville, breaking a 2-2 tie on freshman Sami Oulouheu’s goal in the 74th minute. UVA’s Umberto Pelà and AJ Smith each had a goal and an assist. The Panthers fell to 2-4-5.

No. 3 CNU stays unbeaten with seventh shutout

No. 3 CNU (8-0-2) posted its seventh shutout of the year, handling Marymount 3-0 in Arlington after a scoreless first half. Hanna Heaton scored in the 49th minute, Molly Seventko in the 60th and Bella DiTommaso in the 86th.

Heaton’s free kick, her fourth goal of the year, put her alongside CNU Hall of Famer Victoria Perry as the only Captains with 25 goals and 25 assists for her career.

Short-handed Regent earns draw on road

Playing short-handed for the entire 90 minutes because of injury, Regent (1-8-2, 0-1-1) gained its first Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference point with a 1-1 draw against Warren Wilson (1-5-2, 0-0-1) in Asheville, North Carolina.

The Royals fell behind in the 15th minute, but pulled even on Rhyan Primmer’s header off Anna Teague’s corner kick in the 17th.

5-set win lifts No. 22 Virginia Wesleyan to 17-0

Virginia Wesleyan (17-0, 4-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference), ranked 22nd in Division III, rallied for a 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 15-6) home victory over Lynchburg (15-2, 3-1).

Niya Nash had 50 assists and 14 digs for the Marlins, while Alexis Shaw had 16 kills, Breana Brooks had 13 kills and four blocks and Hannah Smith had 23 digs, three blocks and two aces.

The Hornets’ Tori Williamson had 12 kills and 12 digs, while teammate Leah DiNardo, a First Colonial High alumna, had six blocks.

CNU breezes to win

Christopher Newport (10-6) won 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-12) at Mary Washington behind Alyssa Dozier’s 11 kills, Emmy Carpenedo’s 10 kills and Fielding Croft’s 33 assists. CNU hit .430, its best mark in one match in 10 years.

Apprentice captures conference title

Apprentice School won the inaugural New South Athletic Conference championship, firing a 632 at Tthe Divide Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, to beat runner-up Mid-Atlantic Christian by 45 strokes.

The Builders’ Parker Wells won the individual medal with a 6-over-par 150, one stroke better than teammate Chris Ivey. Apprentice next will play in the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association nationals Oct. 13-14 in State College, Pennsylvania.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Granby names Wilson as interim coach

Jonathan Wilson was named the interim coach for Granby, replacing Kendal Jefferson, according to on3.com. Jefferson was 16-11 in two-plus seasons, but the Comets are 0-5 this year before Friday night’s game against Manor.

Wilson also is the Comets’ girls varsity basketball coach.

Ex-Hokies RB signs with Jets

Former Virginia Tech running back Khalil Herbert, who has played in 48 NFL games for Chicago and eight for Cincinnati, was signed by the New York Jets. He’ll try to help replace running back Braelon Allen, who was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.
