Hokies LB Caleb Woodson’s status for opener uncertain after DWI charge

Virginia Tech linebacker Caleb Woodson was arrested Saturday for misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, and his status for Sunday’s season-opener against South Carolina is uncertain.

“There’s been a lot of discussions over the last few days regarding this matter,” Hokies coach Brent Pry said Tuesday during his weekly news conference. “Very serious matter. There’s certainly internal program consequences in play, measures in play. And then the university’s policy, the athletic department’s policies — we’re committed to see that out. As far as his play this weekend, that’s yet to be determined.”

Woodson is due in Montgomery/Christiansburg General District Court on Sept. 9.

Court records also show that Woodson was cited for reckless driving last month in Warren County, driving 96 mph in a 70-mph zone. He faces a Sept. 16 court date there.

Last year, Woodson paid $260 in fines in Montgomery/Christiansburg for driving 96 mph in a 65-mph zone.

The team’s No. 2 tackler last season, Woodson was among five team captains Tech revealed last week, but Pry said that position has been revoked — with an opportunity to earn it back.

“We love Caleb,” quarterback and captain Kyron Drones said Tuesday. “Everybody makes a bad decision here and there. His just got caught up. But at the same time, we already know the type of player he is and the type of work he put in. So whether he goes out there and plays (Sunday) or not, we’re going to have his back no matter what. We’re still on a mission to go with the game.”

Woodson started 11 of 13 games last year as a sophomore and has drawn raves throughout the offseason.

“From Day 1, I saw the potential that he has,” linebackers coach Xavier Adibi said earlier this month. “If you get to know Caleb and see how serious he is about his craft, how serious he is about taking care of his body. He has a certain mentality you wish a lot of guys had in terms of taking their craft seriously. It’s just a pro-style mentality that he has.”
