Honor Dr. King by repeating his words | Letters to the editor

On this day, we pay tribute to the memory of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by remembering his unshakable faith in a more just and equitable society.

In his words, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope” (Washington, 1968).

He fought a lifelong battle for civil rights, a battle that took his life. Despite constant opposition, he never lost hope and continued to serve his people by fighting for their prosperity. His perseverance in sticking to his principles is a strength to which we should each strive.

Dr. King wrote that “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”

Each of us must ask ourselves that question. On this MLK Day, we are invited to recommit to his ideals of inclusion, passion and service, in the hope we can build a better tomorrow for ourselves and our brothers and sisters.

Celebrate our diversity

The Donald Trump administration is on a mission to erase and eliminate all traces of the achievements of Black people and other minorities in this country. Take the recent move to end free admission to all federal parks on MLK Day and Juneteenth and replace them with free admission on Trump’s birthday, June 14, which is also Flag Day, and on the Parks Service’s 110th birthday on Aug. 25.

Adding more free days would be an enormous benefit to our federal parks by encouraging more Americans to visit these historic sites. Unfortunately, this administration has reduced the parks budget, leaving the system understaffed and creating a worse environment for visitors.

Why is this administration obsessed with eliminating what this country was built on? We’re a melting pot of people with diverse backgrounds, which makes America an amazing place to live. Failing to embrace it is a shame. If this president wants to make America great again as he says, he should make a stronger effort to include all Americans.

‘Hate cannot drive out hate’

Young conservatives are proudly speaking out politically and spiritually for their country. Young Democrats should do the same.

Collectively, they can show the world that empathy is the antidote to the hate that lives around us. They can reject the injustices that fuel this ongoing political resentment by focusing on love, not hate. We must end the bias and disrespectful dialogue that has become the breeding ground for violence everywhere.

Young people are the future. It’s up to them to promote peace for their country and peace for the children they will one day bring into the world. In the words of Dr. King, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

It’s so unforgiveable

Thanks to the Supreme Court, Donald Trump has absolute immunity, and doles it out to anyone who supports him. It was obvious when he pardoned all the Jan. 6 insurrectonists.

Now Stephen Miller is building Trump a private militia of underqualified ICE agents with lower hiring standards, signing bonuses and appeals to white nationalists that used to exist on society’s fringe. Now they operate openly in the MAGA base. JD Vance would not even condemn young people who praised Hitler, saying kids will be kids. The ideas of Nick Fuentes are now welcome in their party.

If you had any doubt before, this is not just a war against Black and brown illegal immigrants. It is a racist party trying to cleanse the blood of America. Trump, Vance and Noem all pegged Renee Good as a domestic terrorist as she lay dead on a street. That effectively gives Trump supporters federal immunity.

If you love democracy and the rule of law, stand up before they’re gone.
