Akheem Mesidor was one of the first players Mario Cristobal had to convince of his vision for Miami.
Mesidor was transferring from West Virginia, and he committed to UM in April 2022 — before the Hurricanes played a game under Cristobal.
Four years later, Mesidor has established himself as a leader at Miami. In his final year with the Hurricanes, he is also one of the best defensive ends in the nation.
“I always trusted that coach Cristobal would build the team that we have right now,” Mesidor said on Tuesday, four days before his last regular-season game at Hard Rock Stadium. “Was there doubts our first two years? Yeah. But I love it here. I love the University of Miami. And I’ve always been proud to be a Hurricane.”
Mesidor’s tenure at UM has not always been easy. He had a strong 2022 campaign, and he was picked as an All-ACC honorable mention. But foot injuries knocked Mesidor out for all but two games of the 2023 season. The veteran defender has played through numerous bumps and bruises since arriving at Miami.
“No one understands how banged up he was and how he played through,” Cristobal said. “I think for the team and the team culture, I think for the dozens of NFL scouts that come here on a weekly basis, that screams high-level player, high-level character, high-level work ethic and high-level toughness and a guy that you have to have in your franchise and in your program.”
When Mesidor returned in 2024, he played where the team needed him. Although he excels as an edge rusher, he has the size to shift inside. When Miami needed him to do that, he did — and performed admirably. Last season, Mesidor had 32 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus gave him 75.5 defensive grade.
“He’s showing the entire world right now what he can do,” Cristobal said. “He’s such a high-impact player. He has learned the value of resilience. He has battled back from injuries and come out on top and still (is) getting better.”
But now that he is back on the edge this season, Mesidor is dominating. He has 34 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and five sacks with three games left in the year. PFF gives him a stellar 90.3 defensive grade, which ranks 11th nationally.
“I’m extremely grateful,” Mesidor said. “I’ve really enjoyed myself this season, along with all my teammates. I know it’s truly a blessing, and I’m happy.”
Defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman said he noticed Mesidor stepping up as a team leader when the first-year defensive coordinator arrived on campus.
“I thought right after (spring football), he really accepted the challenge to pull the defense together, to grow the defense closer together as a unit,” Hetherman said.
Cristobal said Mesidor has been one of the players who has helped establish the team culture.
“His impact on his teammates is awesome,” Cristobal said. “He’s learned leadership, maturity. I can’t say enough great things about him. I love the guy, his work ethic. I think he’s a set-the-standard type of guy.”
Mesidor is poised for his final home game against N.C. State on Saturday, and he is coming off a strong performance against Syracuse (four tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble).
“I think I’ve done a decent job,” Mesidor said. “I still feel like I have a lot to prove, but that could just be me.”
