How Miami’s Carson Beck spent the bye week after rough game vs. Florida

Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck did not spend his bye week fishing or playing video games or finishing a woodworking project.

He was just focused on how he could get better on the field.

“Work. That’s all I do,” Beck said. “Once it’s football season, it’s time to go. It’s time to work, watch film, get in the weight room, try to recover your body, and get back into game shape.”

Beck believes there is plenty for him and the rest of the No. 3 Hurricanes (4-0) to work on as they prepare for their first road game of the year against No. 18 Florida State (3-1, 0-1 ACC).

The veteran quarterback had his worst game as a Hurricane against Florida in Week 4. He completed a season-low 56.7 percent of his passes and threw for 160 yards — the first time a defense held him below 200 yards this year.

Although statistically, Beck’s game against the Gators was his worst of four performances this season, Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said Beck’s outing was not that bad.

“The only thing that was really glaring in that game was, obviously, the interception,” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “… It was a good play by the corner, and so if he leads him a little bit across the field, you’ve got a good play. And you’ve got to tip your hat sometimes when those guys make good plays, too. There were a few situations in the game where we just probably need to trust our progression a little bit and get through it. But other than that, pretty solid performance. It was in the downpour. He was 8 of 16 on third down, which, those completions kept drives going.”

Beck, who did not throw a touchdown and had one interception vs. UF,  said he spent the bye week working on his reads.

“I think just for me, always — and this has been just throughout my career — is always just tightening up on my reads, the process of plays, making sure we’re getting into the right calls, right checks, right against the right coverages,” Beck said.

Beck, who called the bye week a “work week,” said he also worked on building his chemistry with the rest of the offense.

“(I) think that’s a huge thing that translates onto the field,” Beck said. “And I think we were able to do that during the bye week.”

Beck has completed 73.2 percent of his passes through his first four games, which is tied for eighth in the nation. He has seven passing touchdowns and three interceptions. Pro Football Focus gives him a 73.6 passing grade, which is tied for 59th in the nation (and 10th in the ACC) among quarterbacks with 50 or more dropbacks.

“I think, (in) every area, you can always get better,” Beck said.
