After eight consecutive victories, Hampton’s hegemony in the Battle of the Real HU decisively ended Saturday in Washington.
Playing at Audi Field, less than 4 miles from its campus, Howard rolled past the Pirates 34-7 in one of the nation’s most storied HBCU rivalries.
Travis Kerney ran for 113 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Bison (3-1). He also had 26 yards on three catches.
Kerney’s 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter made it 7-0. Kaden Cobb threw a 17-yard scoring pass to KD Mosley to start the second for a 14-0 lead. The Bison (3-1) extended the lead to 20-0 on quarterback Tyriq Starks’ 15-yard run, though the point-after attempt failed.
Kerney ran in from the 8-yard line a little past the midway point of the third quarter, and Billy Roberson II ended Howard’s scoring with a 23-yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left in the third.
Starks completed 12 of 15 throws for 165 yards.
Earl Woods III averted a shutout for Hampton (1-3) on a 53-yard dash with 6:56 remaining. That turned out to be the Pirates’ last possession.
Howard outgained Hampton 456-215 in offensive yardage, gaining 274 on 46 carries.
Hampton starting quarterback Isaiah Freeman was 4 of 10 for 22 yards and was intercepted. Braden Davis, who entered in the second quarter, completed 3 of 4 for 32 yards. Aside from Woods, Donovan Shepard (10 carries for 37 yards) and Davis (eight for 33) provided most of the Pirates’ rushing yardage.
Former Hampton Crabbers quarterback Khaioz Watford led the Pirates with 26 yards receiving on two grabs.
