HAMPTON — A Hampton Roads Transit bus driver was injured and had to be extricated following a crash Sunday afternoon.
Around 3:43 p.m. dispatch received multiple reports of a collision involving an HRT bus and a passenger vehicle at the intersection of S. Little Back River Road and Settlers Landing Road, in the Olde Hampton neighborhood, according to Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue. Callers reported the bus left the roadway and hit a tree.
Fire and rescue units arrived at 3:49 p.m. and found the bus driver pinned within the vehicle with significant injuries, according to authorities. Because the driver was pinned between the bus wall and seat, the extrication process was “exceptionally complex,” fire and rescue said.
Due to the prolonged rescue and the need for life-saving care, York County Fire and Rescue was requested to provide blood for field administration. Fire and rescue crews recently finished training for this kind of operation and is currently integrating it into its standard field operations, according to the release. Sentara’s Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance responded, carrying a trauma surgeon to provide care for the driver. Once extricated from the bus, the driver was taken to a landing zone where Nightingale flew them to a regional trauma center for treatment.
The cause of the crash is being investigated, according to the release.
No other information has been released.
