Human remains found outside an abandoned home in New Britain this week have been identified as belonging to a child, police said.
The remains were discovered Wednesday outside a home at 80 Clark St. after officers responded there on the report of “suspicious behavior,” according to the New Britain Police Department.
On Friday, police said investigators learned from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that the remains “are that of an adolescent female.” It was not immediately clear whether investigators have been able to identify the girl.
“While we understand there are still many questions surrounding this case, it is crucial for us to allow the medical examiner’s office to continue their work,” the police department said in a statement. “Our police department has been working around the clock to piece together the information that has come forward to determine a timeline and an exact location of events leading up to our discovery earlier in the week.”
In a statement to the school community, officials with the Consolidated School District of New Britain said that they are “mindful that this news may be impacting members of our school community” and are “aware of unconfirmed reports that this individual may be a former student.”
“At this time, law enforcement has not publicly identified the individual involved,” said Ryan Langer, a spokesperson for the school district. “Out of respect for the family and in alignment with standard protocols, we are not able to comment or confirm any information related to the identity of the individual at this time.”
“The district is prepared to make support services available to students and staff,” Langer said.
According to police, officers found the remains in a “large container” as they were checking the property surrounding the abandoned home. The container was in the backyard area along the fence line, police said. Police said officers immediately believed what was inside was human remains.
Investigators then contacted the New Britain State’s Attorney’s Office and secured a search warrant for the property, which was carried out along with detectives from the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad. The incident remains under investigation.
