Hurricanes stay put in AP poll; Gators plummet after loss to newly ranked USF

The Miami Hurricanes will have a September matchup with a ranked in-state opponent. It just might not be the one fans expected.

Miami stayed put at No. 5 in this week’s AP poll, and its upcoming opponent, South Florida, entered the top 25 with an upset win over then-No. 13 Florida in Gainesville on Saturday.

UM also ranked sixth in the USA Today coaches poll and No. 6 in the FWAA-NFF Super 16.

The Hurricanes, who beat overmatched Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, spent a second consecutive week in the top five for only the third time since 2005. They previously stuck in the top five for longer than a week in 2017 and last year.

After its loss to USF, Florida dropped out of the rankings. The Bulls entered the top 25 at No. 18. Additionally, Miami’s in-state and conference rival, FSU, moved from No. 14 to No. 10 after dominating East Texas A&M 77-3 in Tallahassee.

Miami has two ranked teams ahead on the schedule: USF and FSU. Future opponents Florida, Louisville, SMU and Pittsburgh also received votes.
