Forget Alligator Alcatraz.
We have a much bigger problem in South Florida: the invasion of iguanas.
Our beautiful flowers are being devoured. Because there are no natural predators to control the iguana population, they continue multiplying in excessive numbers.
Check those little holes in your yard where they lay their eggs.
When will the state offer a solution to this illegal invasion of iguanas? Guns are not a viable solution.

A publicity stunt
Although I am a Florida resident, I spend my summers in Washington, D.C., where I held the elected position of Ward 2 Committeeman to the Washington, D.C. Democratic State Committee.
While police and agents of various federal agencies patrolling D.C. streets along with the Metropolitan D.C. Police, 1,000 military troops from several states are placed around the national mall, monuments, Metro stations and Union Station.
These are not locations of criminal activity. National Guard troops stand around in clusters, passing the time of day and night. This is a waste of money, and these soldiers could be put to better use back in their home states.
Their presence is a publicity tactic employed by President Trump and his administration — and most people will recognize it for what it is.

A very shady operation
This loyal American is very wary of Republican attempts to rig the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections by their very redrawing of the Texas congressional maps so that they will favor GOP candidates.
It appears they are finally realizing that voters are very unhappy that their “One Big Beautiful Bill” bill will cost millions of citizens their health care and add trillions to the federal deficit.

When science mattered
In the summer of 1969, America landed on the moon. It was a huge demonstration of a country’s dedication to science and knowledge.
In 1991, the Soviet Union, America’s superpower foe, fell. But our role as the only superpower and America’s exceptionalism since then has ended.
America embraced creating a privileged wealthy class. Leveling wealth distribution stopped. The middle class started shrinking.
Today, belief in science and education-based decisions has been diminished and demonized. America has turned to creation of wealth for elites, and control of the remainder of population by populist propaganda that diminishes the value of truth and science-based knowledge. We brought this decline on ourselves.

A valued voice
It was a pleasure to read Gilbert Lachow’s letter to the editor in the Sun Sentinel (“An enemy of Israel,” Aug. 24).
He is a rarity: a child who survived the Holocaust when a million and a half Jewish children and millions more were murdered.
During my tenure as the director of the Holocaust Council of Greater MetroWest in New Jersey, he spoke against prejudice and antisemitism to thousands of students and teachers in New Jersey and Florida.
As a witness to the horrors that result from hatred and calls to violence by self-serving, dictatorial hate-mongers who promise utopia but eventually deliver misery and death to the people who elect them, Lachow recognizes “pie in the sky” con artists who choose politics because they have proven inept at more demanding professions.

Too much fear of Trump
President Franklin Roosevelt’s famous statement, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” now makes full sense to me.
Too many representatives in Congress are quite fearful of Donald Trump. It is that fear that we need to fear.
