Indian River High student identified as victim in Chesapeake fatal shooting

CHESAPEAKE — School officials have confirmed the identity of a teenager shot in an Indian River neighborhood who later died from his injuries at a hospital.

Raheem Brown, 15, was a student at Indian River High School.

“Our hearts go out to the entire community, especially Raheem’s family, friends, and all who knew and cared for him,” the school’s principal, Naomi Dunbar, said in a letter addressed to the families of students.

The Chesapeake Police Department said the shooting occurred the evening of Sept. 21 on Sun Avenue, which is near the intersection of Providence Road and South Military Highway. He died days later under medical supervision.

An online fundraiser for Brown accepts donations toward the high school sophomore’s funeral.

On the fundraiser’s page, he is remembered for an “infectious smile and humor” and as a “formidable presence” on the football field.

Dunbar said school resources had been devoted to help students processing the grief of losing a classmate.

“Let us keep Raheem’s family in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.

Brown’s family could not immediately be reached by phone.
