Job: Log room manager, Newport News Shipbuilding
At work: I use my skill set of leadership, technical knowledge, dexterity and problem-solving to contribute to building safe, efficient and seaworthy nuclear aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines that enable our military personnel to protect and serve.
Volunteer activities: Ementoring; Hampton chapter of National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, coaching, leadership skills and mental health awareness to business and professional women in leadership; Hampton Roads International Society for Performance Improvement, presentations for performance improvement and strategies to upskill the workforce; OSHAMA, mentoring and development programs for youths and young adults; and Disabled American Veterans, providing veterans with information on benefits and disability compensation.
Home and family: I grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, and currently live in Virginia Beach. Home is Louisiana and wherever my mom lives. I have three children and three grandchildren.
Motivating factor: Making a difference by sharing information or knowledge. For me, knowledge is power. However, it is only powerful if shared. Most will maneuver differently in life when they are involved.
Advice for women in business: Do not change the essence of who you are to be what others think you should.
The one thing I would change about Hampton Roads: The opportunity to grow as business owners or entrepreneurs without the limitation of accessibility to grants and information.
Professional goal in five years: Director of workforce development programs.
Downtime: Spending time with family and friends, listening to books and enjoying the beauty of nature.
What really gets under my skin: People who navigate without honesty and integrity.
