Isle of Wight crash temporarily closed portion of James River Bridge, caused area power outages

ISLE OF WIGHT — A tractor-trailer crashed Monday night near the James River Bridge, temporarily causing area power outages and the bridge’s partial closure after the driver ran the vehicle off the road and struck several power lines.

Virginia State Police said an overturned tractor-trailer was found in the marshland adjacent to southbound Route 17 around 8:15 p.m., just north of the first gas station entering Carrollton. Troopers said the crash caused power outages in the surrounding area.

The crash caused Route 17, on the Newport News side of the James River, to be closed for a few hours. A Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed the lanes of Route 17 had been reopened by about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

As of Tuesday morning, Dominion Energy’s outage map did not indicate any power outages in the Carrollton area.

The chassis of the truck had been visibly twisted and was disfigured. It was not immediately clear what caused the single-vehicle crash.

No additional details were immediately available.
