Jack Mokris leads Bishop Moore in FHSAA state golf at Mission Inn

After the first day of the Class 2A FHSAA golf state finals at Mission Inn Golf Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, the Bishop Moore boys are content with their position.

It could have been better, and it could have been worse.

The Hornets shot 309 as a team and are three strokes behind leader Dr. Joaquin Garcia High School (306) of Palm Beach County with Fleming Island (308) and Coral Springs Charter (309) in between.

“We’re going to focus on the positives going into Day 2,” Bishop Moore coach Marvin Snyder said. “The team’s excited; they feel like they have more in the tank.”

The Hornets were led by sophomore Jack Mokris, who shot 4-under 68 to lead all individuals after 18 holes.

“He thinks he’s got more in the tank, too,” Snyder said. “He’s a competitor who’s going to do what’s best for the team.”

Mokris set a school record with a round of 62 in the regular season.

Since the Hornets are in fourth place right now, they will tee off before the top three teams and get to post a number while the other teams will still have five holes to go.

“The front nine is so tough (on the El Campeon Course), so we just need to survive the first eight holes, and then go out and have some fun on the back nine,” Snyder said.

On the Las Colinas Course, American Heritage of Broward leads the girls tourney with 304. Bishop Moore is 11th at 357.

Hornets’ junior Emma Sanabria is tied for 10th with 3-over-par 74. She’s only four strokes behind leader Lily Martin of South Walton.
