JAMES CITY — James City County supervisors on Tuesday reapproved a senior living facility on Richmond Road that was first approved six years ago.
The 50-unit facility, located at 6015 Richmond Road near the Villages at Westminster and Raintree Villas communities, will serve residents ages 55 and older. The Board of Supervisors first approved a special use permit in 2019, but construction did not occur within the required 36-month timeframe so the developer had to return to the board.
Supply chain issues caused by the Covid pandemic as well as financing issues kept the developer from coming back for another special use permit until now, said Jack Haldeman, who chairs the county’s planning commission. The planning commission also gave approval for the permit.
The facility will be located near a 46-unit townhome development already in the works on Forest Heights Road. Both the townhomes and the facility’s 50 units will be offered as affordable housing units, said County Planner Allison Jackura.
Chase Grogg, representing Wayne Harbin Builder Inc., said preliminary rental rates are projected to range from $800 to $1,200 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,000 to $1,500 for a two-bedroom apartment. For the townhome units, projected home prices range from $212,000 to $394,350.
There is no estimate yet on when the facility might open.
