JAMES CITY — James City County has entered into an emergency contract with Tidewater Fibre Corp. following the recycling provider’s contract termination by the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority, the county announced Wednesday.
TFC will provide curbside recycling services to county customers on their regularly scheduled day and week through Jan. 13. The 90-day contract will begin Oct. 13 and cover services included in the Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 bill.
The Chesapeake-based provider’s nearly 7-year-old contract was terminated by the authority on Sept. 30, leaving the four localities it served scrambling for options. The authority cited “significant performance deficiencies,” which TFC disputed.
Williamsburg quickly contracted with Republic Services, which already serves as the city’s curbside garbage provider, while York County is still working with the authority to find alternative recycling solutions. Poquoson also signed into an emergency contract with TFC but is still looking for a long-term solution.
James City County will enter into a competitive bid process for a long-term provider prior to the end of its emergency contract, Wednesday’s news release said.
