James Madison’s women beat Virginia Tech 65-56 Sunday in Harrisonburg, finishing on a 12-1 run after trailing 55-53 with 3:36 remaining.
Before 3,320 fans inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center, the Dukes (4-3) held the Hokies (5-1) to one field goal on their final seven attempts. JMU outrebounded Virginia Tech 47-27.
JMU’s Peyton McDaniel finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate student Ashanti Barnes, from Lake Taylor High, tied her career high with 16 rebounds and registered 14 points. Zakiya Stephenson, from Princess Anne High, had seven points and two steals.
Virginia Tech’s Carleigh Wenzel led all players with 20 points.
Howard 64, William & Mary 53: The Tribe (1-4) lost to the Bison (6-1) in Washington, though W&M’s Cassidy Geddes posted her first college double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Monet Dance had 12 points.
W&M outrebounded Howard 40-32 but was hurt by 22 turnovers. Howard’s Zennia Thomas had 18 points and 10 rebounds.
No. 2 South Carolina 121, Queens 49: Joyce Edwards scored 25 points and Ta’Niya Latson 24 to lead South Carolina (6-0) to its most points in a game in coach Dawn Staley’s 18 seasons. The Royals fell to 3-3.
No. 3 UCLA 88, Southern 37: Angela Dugalic scored 20 points and Kiki Rice added 17 points for the host Bruins (6-0) against the Jaguars (1-4).
No. 6 Michigan 81, Syracuse 55: Te’Yala Delfosse came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points for the Wolverines (5-1) at the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase in Uncasville, Connecticut. Uche Izoje had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Orange (5-1).
No. 9 Maryland 84, George Mason 62: Oluchi Okananwa scored a career-high 23 points and Yarden Garzon added 16 for the Terrapins (7-0), who used a 20-2 run spanning halftime to secure the final game of their season-opening homestand. Zahirah Walton had 27 points for the Patriots (4-2).
No. 10 TCU 93, UT Rio Grande Valley 57: Marta Suarez had 24 points with six 3-pointers and grabbed 10 rebounds, Olivia Miles scored 22 points and TCU (6-0) beat the Vaqueros (3-3) to stretch its school-record home winning streak to 29 games.
