Kecoughtan High School in Hampton evacuated after 2 security threats

Kecoughtan High School in Hampton evacuated students Friday morning after finding a gun in a student’s possession and receiving a bomb threat, according to a phone message sent to parents.

Neither the Hampton Police Division nor Hampton City Schools could be reached immediately to provide more detail about the evacuation or threat.

On Friday morning, Woodland Road, the road leading to the school, was blocked in both directions. One police officer and multiple school employees at one of the roadblocks said students were being taken to the Hampton Roads Convention Center as a result of a “bomb threat.”

School security officers were conducting routine safety procedures and found the firearm using a weapon detection unit, according to the school’s message sent to parents. The student, who remains unidentified, was taken into custody and the gun was confiscated. The school then conducted additional safety checks, where staff found a “suspicious package” on campus.

The school was evacuated, and all students and staff were transported to Hampton Roads Convention Center for reunification, according to the call to parents. Hampton police officers and Hampton Fire and Rescue responded to the school. The Newport News bomb squad truck was also seen at the school.

At the convention center midday, hundreds of people were seen inside a ballroom waiting to pick up their children. Some of the parents were wearing business clothes, others were more casual. Some parents took pets with them to pick up their children. Buses were still dropping children off at the convention center around 12:30 p.m.

“The safety and security of our school community remain our highest priority,” the school division said in the message to parents. “We are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for our students and will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available.”
