Gymnastics
A day after leading Kempsville to its first state team gymnastics championship, Violett Clonch thrived during Saturday’s individual championships at Kellam High in Virginia Beach.
Encompassing all VHSL classes, Clonch won the all-around championship with 38.975 points. She also won the vault with a 9.925 average, won the balance beam at 9.850, was second in the floor exercise with a 9.50 and was third on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.70.
Kellam’s Avery Handlon was fourth all-around at 37.925. She shared the bars championship at 9.725 with Teagan Wielechowski of Northern Virginia’s Yorktown High and was the vault runner-up at 9.875.
Robinson’s Addison Rowland won on the floor with a 9.55.______
Boys basketball
Catholic 54, Norfolk Collegiate 51: The top-seeded Crusaders (28-4) won behind tournament MVP Dean Williams’ 20 points. Carter Bullock, who had 13 points, and Tabren Hawkins, who had 10, joined him on the all-tournament team. For the Oaks, Gavin Mallette scored 13 points, Legend Bunch 12 and Josh Mills 12.
Class 5 Region B quarterfinals
#3 Nansemond River 61, #6 Maury 52: Taron Atwater and Quinton Cruse both scored 16 points. Jonathan Smith added 11.

Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools final
Catholic 68, Steward 61: The top-seeded Crusaders won the tournament Saturday in Norfolk Christian’s gym.
Tournament MVP Riley Lynch had 17 points, Lauryn Loritts had 16 points and Justice Brown-Jones had 11 points and eight rebounds. All of them made the all-tournament team.
Class 5 Region B quarterfinals
#1 Menchville 95, #8 Granby 16: The Monarchs dusted the Comets to reach a semifinal versus the Maury-Woodside winner.
#2 King’s Fork 79, #7 Nansemond River 56: Kennedi Young had 22 points, Brittany Evans 14 and Jazlyn Hubbard 12 for the Bulldogs in an all-Suffolk matchup. They expanded a 35-32 halftime lead to 58-43 in the third quarter.
#3 Warwick 51, #6 Kecoughtan 39: Jaliyah Nettles finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Kelsie Swords chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds.
