KING WILLIAM — King William County plans to show its love for the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the United States with an iconic sign.
Virginia boasts more than 300 LOVE signs under a popular branding initiative to promote the state’s destinations and to engage visitors under the slogan “Virginia is for Lovers.”
Now the King William Historical Historic Society has commissioned a sign to be located close to the historic courthouse that was first used in 1725. The county held a 300th anniversary celebration for the building earlier this year.
The arrival of a LOVEworks sign in King William County would follow closely on the heels of neighboring King and Queen County, which unveiled its first LOVE sign at the library at 396 Newtown Road in August. Also in August, the Town of West Point unveiled a LOVE sign that was incorporated into a mural on a building in its downtown.
King William’s sign would be placed on the triangle grassy area in front of the courthouse complex.
The King William County Board of Supervisors granted the Historic Society permission to set up a sign outside the courthouse at its meeting Oct. 14. Interim County Administrator Clarence Monday said the sign would be paid for by the Virginia Tourism Corporation.
“I love it. I think it’s an awesome thing,” said Supervisor Mary Sue Bancroft. “It’s a nice thing. It makes you smile.”
Monday promised to gain permission from the judiciary for the sign by the courthouse. “We don’t want to get locked up,” he joked.
