King William High School placed on lockdown after weapon threat, no gun found

KING WILLIAM — King William High School was placed on a lengthy lockdown on Friday following a social media post about weapons that resulted in the arrest of a student.

Students were held in classrooms and on buses as police officers with dogs searched the school after a student was taken into custody.

“During the entry process at KWHS this morning, a student alerted school officials to a social media post indicating that another high school student may be in possession of a weapon,” King William County Public Schools stated on its Facebook page.

“The student who issued the threat was located and taken into custody, and no weapon was found on the student or their personal belongings,” the school division said. All students and staff were safe, the statement said.

The high school was placed on lockdown as students arrived on Friday. Hamilton Holmes Middle School was placed on “hold.”

“We acknowledge the inconvenience and disruption of this morning’s events, but want our community to be reassured that schools and law enforcement take these matters very seriously,” the school division said.

The lockdown occurred during the student entry process, meaning some students had to remain on buses in a secure location while student drivers were sent back to their vehicles. Late arrivals were not allowed onto the campus. Parents reported that students at all schools were dismissed early on Friday.
