Kymora Johnson scores 41 as UVA women dominate Winthrop

Kymora Johnson poured in 41 points and sank a school-record 10 3-pointers Saturday as Virginia routed Winthrop 88-53 before 4,077 at John Paul Jones Arena.

The sophomore from Charlottesville was 15 of 20 from the field, including 10 of 13 from beyond the arc, and added six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Only Mimi McKinney, who netted 48 at North Carolina in January 1998, has scored more in UVA history.

Caitlin Weimar added 13 points, and Paris Clark had 11 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds for UVA (9-3).

Amourie Porter had 22 points and five rebounds for Winthrop (7-7), though she hit just 6 of 19 shots.

Christendom 71, Regent 47: The Crusaders stifled the Royals in Gateway Christian’s gym in Virginia Beach as Mary Pennefather scored 25 points and Elizabeth Heisler 23. Christendom outscored Regent 34-14 in the second half.

Kennedy Shipman led Regent with 15 points, but the Royals hit just 27.4% (17 of 62). Amara Groth had nine points.

William & Mary 64, Bethune-Cookman 52: Monet Dance and Jana Sallman posted double-doubles as the Tribe (7-4) won its sixth consecutive game, defeating the Wildcats (2-10) to finish a 2-0 stay at the Holiday Hoops Classic in Stetson’s arena in DeLand, Florida. This is W&M’s longest winning streak since 2016-17.

Dance had 14 points and 10 assists, sinking 10 of 11 free throws. Sallman had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

W&M trailed 11-4 but led 22-21 at halftime. B-CU was ahead 26-23 before the Tribe scored seven consecutive points for a 30-26 edge. W&M remained in front thereafter.

Christopher Newport 81, Catholic 73: Mia Wilson scored 19 points as the Captains (11-2), ranked 17th in the Division III coaches’ poll, won the inaugural Nelson Hinson Invitational at Freeman Center over the Cardinals (7-4). CNU extended its winning streak to nine.

Jessica Dornak scored 12, Caitlin Crump 11 and Elizabeth Creed 10 for CNU. Creed had nine rebounds and three assists, and Dornak grabbed eight rebounds.

Anna Scoblick and Lauren Kraft netted 18 points apiece for Catholic, and Carly Catania had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Captains led 14-2, only to see Catholic recover for a 51-49 lead with 3:05 left in the third quarter. CNU scored seven unanswered points and led thereafter.

**Maryville of Tennessee won the consolation game 70-43 over York of Pennsylvania.

No. 25 Princeton 71, George Mason 69, OT: Madison St. Rose scored 19 points, and Ashley Chea’s basket as time expired sent the Tigers (11) to a comeback victory in overtime in Fairfax. Zahira Walton scored 18 points and Hampton High graduate Kennedy Harris 17 for George Mason (6-6).

Princeton used a 7-0 run in the final 23 seconds of regulation to force the extra session. The Patriots’ Page Greenburg committed a turnover with 14 seconds left, and Walton fouled Toby Nweke with eight seconds remaining in regulation for a Princeton three-point play to tie it.

Olivia Hutcherson scored 17 points and Fadima Hall grabbed 10 rebounds for the Tigers, who have won nine straight.

Marshall 83, James Madison 74: Freshman Olivia Olson scored a season-high 26 points as the Thundering Herd (11-3, 2-0) upended the Dukes (9-5, 1-1) in Huntington, West Virginia, ending JMU’s 21-game regular-season Sun Belt winning streak, which included an 18-0 mark last season.

VCU transfer Timaya Lewis-Eutsey had 20 points, seven assists and four steals for Marshall.

JMU lost despite 21 points, nine rebounds and three steals from former Lake Taylor High and Old Dominion player Ashanti Barnes. Peyton McDaniel had 19 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Dukes led most of the game, including 62-53 with 8:26 to go. But they hit a drought, and Timberlynn Yeast’s layup for a 67-67 tie at the 1:21 mark of the fourth quarter provided regulation’s final points.

Lewis-Eutsey’s three-point play with 4:30 left in OT began an 8-0 run for a decisive 75-69 edge.

Penn State 78, VCU 66: Kiyomi McMiller had 17 points and eight rebounds as the Nittany Lions (7-4) overcame the Rams (4-9) in the 4 Tha Culture Classic at Henrico Sports & Events Center.

Daija Preston paced VCU with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Tanya Tkachenko had 13 points and four rebounds.

Richmond 72, Alabama A&M 58: The Spiders (10-3) moved ahead 21-7 in the first quarter and won in the 4 Tha Culture Holiday Classic at Henrico Sports & Events Center.

Rachel Ullstrom was 6 of 12 from 3-point range and finished with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists. Maggie Doogan added 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for UR.

Rakiyah Beal scored 16 for the Bulldogs (4-8).

No. 1 Connecticut 90, No. 11 Iowa 64: Azzi Fudd scored 27 points and Sarah Strong added 23 for the Huskies at the Women’s Champions Classic in Brooklyn, New York.

Strong also had seven rebounds and six steals for the Huskies (12-0) against the Hawkeyes (10-2) after No. 16 Louisville routed 17th-ranked Tennessee 89-65 in the opener of the doubleheader. Strong, a sensational sophomore, dominated the first half with 20 points and five steals as UConn led 42-31.

No. 3 South Carolina 105, Florida Gulf Coast 43: Joyce Edwards had 29 points and 10 rebounds, Madina Okot had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and the Gamecocks wrapped up a two-game trip to Florida with a rout over FGCU (3-6) in Fort Myers. They won at South Florida 103-44 on Thursday.

No. 4 UCLA 106, Long Beach State 44: Gabriela Jaquez and Lauren Betts scored 17 points apiece for UCLA (11-1) in the Bruins’ largest victory of the season in their final nonconference game. Kiki Rice added 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Bruins against the 49ers (0-10).

No. 9 TCU 77, Kansas State 55: Olivia Miles scored 29 points, but came up short of a record fourth consecutive triple-double, as TCU opened the Big 12 season with a victory in Fort Worth, Texas.

Miles, a senior transfer from Notre Dame, had eight rebounds and four assists. She registered triple-doubles in TCU’s last three games but did not become the first Division I player with four in a row.
