Large fire breaks out in Osceola scrapyard, efforts to extinguish it still ongoing hours later

Firefighters are working to extinguish a large scrapyard fire in Osceola County hours after it broke out earlier Thursday, officials said.

The fire started at a scrapyard on Old Tampa Highway, according to Osceola County Fire Rescue spokesperson Joshua Holder, who said he was first informed of the fire around 11:30 a.m. The Kissimmee Fire Department and fire rescue crews from both Orange and Polk counties also responded to the scene in a multi-agency effort.

Holder said around 4:30 p.m. the fire was significant when compared in size to the average house fire, but that it was largely contained to the scrap pile and there was no immediate danger to any surrounding properties or structures. He also said there were no injuries.

Both U.S. Highway 17-92 and Old Tampa Highway have been closed at Broad Street, according to Holder.

He said the fire resulted in an extended response from the fire departments, with about 100 personnel on-scene at the time and many putting water on it to try to extinguish it.

The Florida State Fire Marshal will investigate the cause of the fire, Holder said.
