Late 3-pointer by Elon hands William & Mary rare home defeat

William & Mary suffered just its second home loss of the season Saturday in 11 games at Kaplan Arena, falling 81-78 to Elon before 5,074. The Phoenix’s Bryson Cokley capped his game-long heroics by sinking a 3-pointer with just more than two seconds remaining.

Cokley scored 29 points for Elon (14-13, 6-8 Coastal Athletic Association), hitting 7 of 11 3-point tries. Chandler Cuthrell had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Kyle Pulliam had 18 points for the Tribe (16-10, 7-7), while Reese Miller had 15 and Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi and Jo’el Emanuel had 13 apiece. Chase Lowe had eight points, five rebounds and four assists.

Elon expanded its lead to 53-43 before the Tribe scored nine consecutive points to pull to 53-52 with 12:40 remaining. The game was close the rest of the way, though W&M didn’t lead in the final five minutes.

An Emanuel layup with 30 seconds on the clock forced a tie at 78. After Cokley’s last shot, Miller missed a desperation 3-pointer off the backboard at the buzzer.

Norfolk State 75, Delaware State 58: The Spartans (12-14, 5-4) moved above .500 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, dominating the first half against the Hornets (6-18, 1-8) for a 39-26 edge at Echols Hall.

NSU’s Anthony McComb III had 19 points and five rebounds, while Devon Ellis had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Elijah Jamison added 12 points, and Keyontae Lewis had 10 points and five rebounds.

Dean Shepherd led DSU with 16 points.

Virginia Wesleyan 76, Washington and Lee 59: Omari DeVeaux had 29 points and six rebounds at TowneBank Arena as the Marlins (17-6, 12-2) retained their share of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference alongside Randolph-Macon.

Also for VWU, Paul Anderson had 11 points, Amari Moorer had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Khai Seargeant had 10 points. The Marlins had just five turnovers.

Connor Amorosi paced the Generals (16-7, 8-6) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Mary Washington 88, Christopher Newport 77: The 11th-ranked Eagles (19-3), who dropped from No. 2 in Division III after losing in Newport News to CNU just more than a week ago, gained payback on the No. 8 Captains (19-4) in Fredericksburg. That ended CNU’s 11-game winning streak.

Kye Robinson scored 25 points to lead four Eagles in double figures. Jay Randall scored 21 and Kaden Bates, who was scoreless in UMW’s loss at CNU, added 15 points.

Down by 13 at the half, CNU cut the deficit to 45-37, but UMW surged ahead 74-53 with just more than six minutes to play.

Freshman Cam Quarles scored a season-high 15 points, but CNU shot just 34%. Toa Hollenbeck, Tyson Henderson, Isaiah Dozier and Zyir Baskerville all posted 12 points. Hollenbeck netted a Freeman Center-record 43 when the Captains beat the Eagles.

VCU 78, Richmond 67: Terrence Hill Jr. scored 20 points at Robins Center as the Rams earned their ninth consecutive win.

Hill also added five rebounds for the second-place Rams (20-6, 11-2 Atlantic 10). Jadrian Tracey scored 14 points and Nyk Lewis had 10.

Will Johnston led the Spiders (14-12, 4-9) with 17 points. AJ Lopez added 14 points, and Mike Walz had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Hill had 15 points in the first half to help VCU gain a 47-27 halftime edge. UR trailed by 23 early in the second half but trimmed the margin to three before VCU regained command.

Radford 90, Charleston Southern 80: Jaylon Johnson scored 17 points for the host Highlanders (14-13, 7-5 Big South), who bolted to a 50-30 lead by halftime and ended a two-game skid. Del Jones had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, Dennis Parker Jr. had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and reserve Mari Jordan had 12 points.

Nate Brafford and Jacob Taylor scored 14 each for the Buccaneers (12-15, 3-9).

Longwood 82, USC Upstate 75, OT: VCU transfer Fats Billups, a redshirt junior, netted a career-high 25 points for the Lancers (14-14, 6-7 Big South), who outscored the Spartans 13-6 in overtime in Farmville.

Longwood was 18 of 52 from inside the arc but 10 of 16 (63%) from outside it. Billups was 6 of 9 from 3-point range.

For USC Upstate (11-16, 3-9), Karmani Gregory scored 23 and Mason Bendinger 19.

Liberty 73, UTEP 64: JJ Harper’s 18 points and six rebounds in El Paso, Texas, helped the Flames (22-3, 14-0 Conference USA) pick up their 16th consecutive victory.

Brett Decker Jr. went 6 of 14 from the field (3 for 9 from 3-point range) to add 17 points, and Zach Cleveland had 13 points.

Elijah Jones had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Miners (10-16, 6-9).

James Madison 69, Appalachian State 58: Justin McBride scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Dukes (14-13, 6-8) extended their winning streak to three by knocking off the Mountaineers (18-10, 10-5), who began the day leading the Sun Belt.

Cliff Davis had 11 points and Bradley Douglas 10 for JMU, which committed just five turnovers.

Luke Wilson had 18 points and 16 rebounds for App State, and Alonzo Dodd had 18 points.

Furman 90, VMI 72: Asa Thomas had 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in Lexington for the Paladins (17-10, 8-6 Southern Conference), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Cooper Bowser added 14 points and blocked three shots.

TJ Johnson finished with 26 points and six rebounds to lead the Keydets (6-21, 1-13), who have dropped 12 consecutive games. Tan Yildizoglu totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Navy 84, Colgate 80, OT: Jordan Pennick scored 22 points and Austin Benigni added five points in overtime for the Midshipmen (21-6, 13-1) in Hamilton, New York, as they won their ninth consecutive game and tightened their Patriot League lead.

Pennick went 8 of 17 from the field (6 for 13 from 3-point range).  Donovan Draper added 20 points while shooting 6 of 9 from the field and had eight rebounds and three steals.

Jalen Cox finished with 30 points, seven assists and three steals for the Raiders (16-11, 10-4), whose three-game winning streak ended.

American 75, Army 63: Madden Collins provided 22 points off of the bench, shooting 9 of 11 from the field for the Eagles (14-13, 7-7 Patriot League) in Washington. Matt Mayock added 11 points and five rebounds. The win snapped a five-game skid for the Eagles.

Jaxson Bell led the Black Knights (10-17, 4-10) with 13 points. Army also got 12 each from Jackson Furman and Jorn Everson but lost its fourth straight game.

Fresno State 93, Air Force 63: Led by 18 points each from Wilson Jacques and DeShawn Gory, the Bulldogs (12-13, 6-8 Mountain West) cruised at home in California.

Lucas Hobin finished with 26 points for the Falcons (3-22, 0-14), who have lost 18 consecutive games.
