Lehigh Valley high school football roundup: Whitehall storms back to stun Northampton, Easton routs Emmaus, Southern Lehigh pulls away to stay unbeaten

Here is a roundup of Friday night’s top Lehigh Valley high school football games in Week 5.

Whitehall 56, Northampton 49

Northampton began its battle against Whitehall with a similar start to the game against the Red Rovers, scoring the first 28 points in just under 15 minutes to establish control against the Zephyrs. Keegan Hackett scored the first and last of four consecutive touchdowns for the Konkrete Kids on a pair of short-yardage scores. Sandwiched in between were touchdown throws to Cameron Hersch and Sincere Wadlington off the hand of senior quarterback Gavin Taff.

Whitehall responded remarkably with four touchdowns in just over four minutes to tie things up behind two touchdowns by Tanner Dogmanits and a 71-yard kick return to start the second half by his brother Talon. The Zephyrs converted a 4th-and-goal and a 3rd-and-goal from the Northampton 14 to keep drawing even before Jeziah Gregory’s 31-yard TD with 5:21 gave Whitehall its first lead of the night.

Hackett’s third touchdown knotted the score back up at 49 with 2:05 left in the fourth quarter for the Zephyrs to go down the field and win a thriller. For the second straight week, Northampton surrendered a go-ahead touchdown with exactly 13 seconds on the clock as the Dogmanits brothers connected for a 24-yard touchdown to complete an unbelievable comeback.

Easton 42, Emmaus 7

In its EPC home opener, Easton stormed out of the locker room with a dominant first quarter that set the stage for a blowout victory over the Green Hornets. Cole Ordway found Andrew Biddle on a 36-yard touchdown for the game’s opening score before the senior quarterback connected with Sean McPeek to double Easton’s lead with 2:18 left in the first quarter.

Sixteen seconds later, McPeek found the end zone again with an interception return for a touchdown to give the Red Rovers a 21-0 lead before the first quarter came to a close. Ordway tacked on with a 48-yard touchdown run and a 68-yard pass to Skyler Fowlin to complete a first half beatdown by a score of 42-0.

North Schuylkill 36, Jim Thorpe 14

Friday night was all about North Schuylkill’s Luke Miller. The senior running back ran it in from 11 yards out to open the scoring while adding the two-point conversion as well. Miller tallied another eight points early in the second quarter with a 78-yard sprint to the end zone before tacking on another conversion.

His third of fourth touchdowns on the night gave the Spartans a 24-6 lead as their two-point conversions created a larger cushion for coach Wally Hall’s group. Cole Lazorick’s second touchdown pass of the night pulled Jim Thorpe closer, but Caden Mengel answered with a 58-yard bomb to Jackson Parker to stretch the lead to 30-14. Lazorick nearly found the end zone again, but his fumble through the end zone put an end to the Olympians’ rally.

Southern Lehigh 35, Pottsville 17

After two thrilling contests last year, including a dramatic 21-point comeback in the district semifinal, Southern Lehigh and Pottsville squared off again. The Spartans moved ahead 14-7 early and took a 14-10 lead into halftime, but a touchdown from the Crimson Tide gave them a 17-14 lead in the second half. The defending PIAA 4A semifinalists pitched a shutout the rest of the way and used three unanswered touchdowns to remain unbeaten with a 35-17 victory.

Liberty 42, Dieruff 0

The Hurricanes backed up their thrilling win over Northampton last week with a dominating effort against the Huskies, but a far more serious situation emerged in the second half when a Dieruff player received medical attention and was later taken away from BASD Stadium in an ambulance. The two teams gathered around the player in the end zone with a large huddle followed by a joint walkway created with players from both teams mixed on both sides.
