Golf fans not following etiquette
I have played and watched golf for more than 50 years. The popularity of the game has never been higher. Unfortunately, the level of class that used to exist in participants and fans is vanishing.
People who think it is OK to play with untucked shirts, caps worn with the bill in the back, or change shoes in the parking lot at private courses are misinformed, classless or both. Fans who think that harassing players at the Ryder Cup as they are ready to hit a shot is not disgraceful lack an acceptable level of intelligence and decorum. Fans who believe that players enjoy seeing them extend hands over the ropes for high or low fives are mistaken. Yelling “get in the hole” upon a shot being struck is unwelcome and obnoxious. If you are not able to observe the great traditions that have been built by the game of golf over the past 75 years, then please choose another place to exhibit your absence of fashion sense and self-control.

Wise words from President Carter
A few of your readers will still remember Jimmy Carter. He was our 39th president and a Nobel laureate. I think it’s worth repeating these words he gave us so many years ago: “A strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to be gentle, firm, thoughtful and restrained. It is a weak nation, like a weak person, that must behave with bluster and boasting and rashness and other signs of insecurity.” Jimmy Carter RIP.

Are we becoming numb to shooting incidents?
Have we Americans become so immune to horrendous violence that a church shooting with two fatalities and eight injured is relegated to page 15 of The Morning Call (Sept. 29) while a human interest story, though uplifting, occupied much of the front page?

Solar power for schools program needs support
I’m writing in response to The Morning Call’s article, “Solar panels on Lehigh Valley schools could power more than 9,000 homes, environmental group estimates.”
The study by PennEnvironment states that if Pennsylvania schools go solar, carbon dioxide pollution equivalent to operating 300,000 cars would be removed annually. Furthermore, this would help the state incorporate more clean energy, phasing out fossil fuels. Subsequently, this will remove toxic pollution from our air and decrease the frequency and intensity of natural disasters caused by CO2 pollution.
Yet only 5% of Pennsylvania schools have gone solar so far. Although installing solar panels requires an initial investment, the Solar for Schools Program can fund up to 50% of the eligible project’s total costs, including equipment and installation. Furthermore, state funds can be combined with federal tax credits, including 30%-50% of the project’s cost through the federal Inflation Reduction Act, keeping costs low for schools.
Unfortunately, state legislators haven’t committed to renewing funding for Pennsylvania’s Solar for Schools program. We need local legislators to make renewing it a priority in current budget negotiations in the state capitol.

Trump focuses vengeance on the trivial
President Trump spends a lot of time being mad about frivolous things. Mad at Tylenol, mad at free speech, mad at political opponents, mad at any late-night host that ever made a satirical joke about him, mad about a bad jobs report, mad at reporters who ask him questions he doesn’t like, mad at the escalator and teleprompter at the United Nations. Upset that he hasn’t been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize yet. Rambling on about fat generals, bearded generals, and how our battleships look. Griping that he lost out on a real estate project 20 years ago. What does any of this have to do with anything? The only time he seems happy is when talking about the golden decor in the White House and that fancy ballroom renovation. Maybe he should spend more time and energy worrying about things that actually impact our lives, like grocery prices. Instead, he’s having the Department of Justice persecute political enemies and hosting taxpayer-funded partisan pep rallies for our generals. Leadership is hard to define, but I know it when I see it, and this ain’t it.

Cole-Borghi was failed by DA, rush to judgment
As members of End Mass Incarceration/Power Lehigh Valley, we denounce the way Lehigh County Commissioner Zachary Cole-Borghi has been treated regarding criminal allegations recently made by the district attorney’s office.
Although no haste appears at all necessary for this case, nevertheless:
He was arrested at his workplace, immediately.
He was assessed high bail, immediately.
He was fired from his job, immediately.
And numerous stories about him were published in all forms of public media, immediately.
Whether intentional or not, prosecutors presented the case against Mr. Cole-Borghi in an inflammatory manner. While declining to mention any of the other numerous defendants, the DA’s office included only Mr. Cole-Borghi’s name placed alongside extremely serious allegations against various people.
Other sectors of the community have also failed Mr. Cole-Borghi. Bethlehem failed him by firing him in just hours, leaving him and his family in turmoil.
The opposite of the hallowed principle of the presumption of innocence has occurred, a rush to judgment that should chasten and concern us all.

Schools shouldn’t put Charlie Kirk on pedestal
Charlie Kirk Day in local schools? Maybe his opinions on gun control, women, climate change and many others should be reviewed first. Also take note of his selective empathy. He doesn’t seem like a person to be put up on a pedestal and held in high regard. It is hard to believe that one would want their children to be taught these things as being acceptable.
