School choice is universal, even at Islamic schools
Regarding “State Republicans decry money going to Islamic schools” (Oct. 29): Really? What did you think would happen? If Republicans didn’t think this through when they changed the law to allow state money to go to any one of 2,000 private campuses across our state, maybe, just maybe, they shouldn’t be in Tallahassee proposing any new laws to try to cover up their mistakes.

Withholding food is not a political game
Food is a birthright gift, a life-giving necessity for good health. No child, senior or working parent should be used as a pawn in the “game” of politics by withholding SNAP benefits, a cut that was scheduled to kick in this week before a judge’s ruling Friday. Millions of people would be impacted. We the people pay taxes and there is a reserve for SNAP. Meanwhile, a $300 million ballroom is being built, a Saudi gift of a plane is being redone at the cost of $1 billion, and one or two Air Force Ones are already under contract for over $1 billion… and there are so many more examples. Has all decency been lost?

Ingoglia should apologize to Seminole
Blaise Ingoglia owes Seminole County leadership an apology (“Florida’s CFO Ingoglia seems to back off on claims Seminole is overspending tax money,” Oct. 30). He owes the leaders of Seminole County an apology at a news conference, not a letter. I believe the disrespect spewed from Ingoglia was nasty. A letter simply doesn’t suffice. Unfortunately there is no monetary remedy that would dissuade further activity, but that might have been the only way to prevent further such grandstanding, hurtful behavior. A good public humiliation might go a long way.

McCarthy isn’t worth revisiting
In response to Florida’s using high-school curriculum to rehabilitate the disgraced and disgraceful Sen. Joseph McCarthy, I can only say to Gov. Ron DeSantis, “You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?”

We all deserve share of the wealth
A Friday letter-writer (“Health care is not a human right”) does an excellent job of parroting the talking points of the ultra-wealthy oligarchs who want to keep ordinary citizens as serfs while amassing fortunes that cannot be spent in 1,000 lifetimes. What he and others in the right-wing camp ignore is a simple fact: the wealthy can only accumulate such massive wealth because of the people. If the U.S. population were only 3.4 million people, most likely there would not be one ultra-wealthy person; but, because we are a nation of 340 million people, we have approximately 900,000 decamillionaires and 900 billionaires, 0.24% of the population. There is nothing right about that.
Frances Perkins, Franklin Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor, said it best: “The people are what matter to government, and a government should aim to facilitate the means by which all the people under its jurisdiction can access the best possible life.” She was instrumental in developing Social Security. We’re all in this together. Let’s be fair and rational and share the wealth that all of us together create.

But what about the duck?
News of a woman suing SeaWorld after she was hit by a duck while riding the Mako roller coaster makes for late-night memes, but what about the poor duck? The bird, who was likely flying around minding his own business, is likely dead. As if the theme park doesn’t cause enough animal suffering by jamming them in tanks, they put wildlife at risk by building rides right next to wetlands and waterways.
Yet another reason to stay away.
