Lights in the Parkway closed after ‘significant act of vandalism’ causes extensive damage to displays

Lights in the Parkway will be closed Sunday night and until further notice after a “significant act of vandalism” caused extensive damage to the Allentown holiday lights display.

Damage included bent light poles and posts, and crushed lightbulbs throughout the display in the Lehigh Parkway. Port-a-potties were also pushed into the Little Lehigh Creek, according to a news release from the city.

The city has yet to determine if the damage will impact the Lights in the Parkway season, including whether Move It Monday, scheduled for Monday, will proceed, but preliminary assessments show the damage will be difficult and costly to repair and replace during the current season.

However, the city said every effort will be made to keep the Lights in the Parkway going this season with the resources available, according to the city.

Anyone who purchased tickets for the scheduled Lights in the Parkway event on Sunday should contact the City of Allentown Parks Office for assistance with rebooking or refunds at (610) 437-7757 or by email at events@allentownpa.gov. The parks office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Meanwhile, the incident is being investigated by the Allentown Police Department, which is asking that anyone with information contact the department at (610) 437-7753 through the TIP411 application on www.allentownpa.gov/police.
