Man charged with attempted murder in Evergreen Park Walmart shooting

A 20-year-old Chicago man was charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting of two people at the Walmart in the 2500 block of West 95th Street in Evergreen Park on Oct. 15, according to a police statement.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office approved the charges against Yoseph K. Barnes, of 5400 block of South Indiana, Chicago, and he was ordered detained in the Cook County Jail following an Oct. 17 appearance at the Bridgeview courthouse.

Prosecutors said Barnes was on parole for the illegal possession of a machine gun at the time of the shooting.

Prosecutors said Barnes exited a grey Hyundai car in the Walmart parking lot when the first victim, a 23-year-old man, walked by the passenger side of the car toward the store, according to two witnesses who sat in the car.

Barnes chased the victim into the store, where Barnes pulled out a firearm and began shooting, prosecutors said. A Walmart security guard and employee witnessed the events.

The victim ran into the produce aisle and collapsed near aisle 19, as Barnes continued to follow and fire at him, prosecutors said.  In a brief struggle between Barnes and the victim, Barnes dropped his firearm and the victim picked it up, prosecutors said. Barnes then fled the Walmart through the rear fire exit, they said.

Prosecutors said Barnes shot and injured a 70-year-old woman when she entered the front door moments before Barnes and the other man ran through the door. The shot grazed the woman’s left foot and toes, and she exited the store, they said.

The woman was later transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was treated and released for an injury to her foot. The first victim was also taken to Advocate with five gunshot wounds and a left leg fracture.

When Evergreen Park police and several surrounding agencies arrived after receiving a call at 3 p.m., they found the first victim with multiple gunshot wounds on the ground near aisle 19. Officers recovered the firearm, which was a black nine millimeters Glock 19, with an empty magazine, prosecutors said.

Police found Barnes hiding inside a driveway trash can at 9413 S. Countryside after a resident reported seeing him at 3:17 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m., Barnes admitted that the firearm was his own, police said. He is scheduled to return to court Nov. 7.
