A Newport News man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of a 19-year-old man outside a Newport News motel on Feb. 22.
Jacquese Ihienkonye, 21, also faces charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit a felony and using a firearm in the commission of a felony, the Newport News Police Department said.
Police spokesman Matt Michalec clarified Monday that Ihienkonye was one of the two men shot in the double shooting.
The incident took place just after 5 p.m. at the Palace Inn and Suites, at 10608 Jefferson Ave.
That’s south of Ivy Farms Road on a busy stretch of the city’s busiest thoroughfare.
The two men were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with life-threatening gunshot wounds.
One of the men, Taurion Reed, 19, of Newport News, died at Riverside, while the other — Ihienkonye — was wounded and hospitalized. He was charged after being released from the hospital.
The shooting took place in one of several outdoor stairwells that serve as access points to rooms in the three-story motel.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-Lock-U-Up (1-888-562-5887). Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward for information leading to an arrest.
