CHESAPEAKE — A man accused of shooting at and wounding his coworkers Thursday morning while they were driving on Interstate 464 was arrested hours after shots were fired, authorities said Friday.
Yohance Jahsake Okpara Taylor, 39, of Portsmouth, faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of malicious wounding and three counts of attempted malicious wounding. He is being held without bond at Chesapeake City Jail.
The shooting occurred near the southbound Poindexter Street exit on I-464 at about 8.a.m., said State Police spokesperson Robin Lawson. The posted speed limit is 55 miles per hour. Taylor is accused of shooting from his green Ford Mustang at a white Ram pickup occupied by five people who were on their way to work. Those who were shot at later identified the shooter as a coworker.
Taylor was arrested Thursday evening with the aid of the Chesapeake Police Department and Portsmouth Police Department, about nine hours after the shooting occurred that morning, which is in the South Norfolk area of the city.
A motive for the shooting was not available, Lawson said. Those who were shot at have been released from the hospital.
Lawson said state police were initially notified of a man who’d booked himself into a nearby hospital with an apparent gunshot wound but said it was later determined that two of the passengers of the truck had been struck by broken glass, not a bullet.
An investigation was ongoing and the shooting was isolated, Lawson said.
