Man dies in pedestrian hit-and-run crash in Virginia Beach

A pedestrian crash on the 2400 block of Virginia Beach boulevard caused one fatality, according to a press release from Virginia Beach Police Department.

Officers responded to the crash on the night of Sept. 29. One vehicle struck the pedestrian and then fled the scene. The driver, Anthony Smith, has been charged with driving under the influence and hit-and-run resulting in death.

The pedestrian, a 72-year-old man, was found to be at fault in the crash for failing to yield to the right of way. The VBPD has not yet released the name of the victim as the next of kin has not been notified yet.

As of now in 2025, VBPD have investigated five fatal pedestrian crashes and the pedestrian has been found to be at fault in all five.

“This is a troubling and preventable trend,” said Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate.” We are deeply concerned by the number of serious crashes caused when basic pedestrian traffic laws are ignored. Safety is a shared responsibility: drivers must stay alert and cautious, and pedestrians must follow the laws designed to protect them. Our goal is to prevent these tragedies, but it requires accountability and awareness from everyone using our roadways.”

This is still an ongoing investigation and anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact the VBPD Traffic Safety Unit at (757) 385-4606 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or P3Tips.com.
