NEWPORT NEWS — A man found by authorities with at least one gunshot wound downtown was pronounced dead early Thursday morning.

Officers responded at approximately 11:48 p.m. Wednesday night to a report of a shooting near the intersection of Washington Avenue and 33rd Street. The man — who has not been identified — was taken to a nearby hospital where his death was confirmed after midnight, police said.

An investigation has been opened, according to a Newport News Police Department statement.
